The goal of the Lower Great Highway Pedestrian Improvements Project is to increase pedestrian safety and comfort along Lower Great Highway by implementing near- and medium-term pedestrian improvements and traffic calming measures. The project was born out of community concerns around pedestrian safety, particularly when Upper Great Highway is closed.
Near-Term Measures
The SFMTA Board of Directors approved the near-term measures on Tuesday, October 16, 2018. Implementation of the near-term measures is expected later this year.
To see a map of the coming near-term improvements, click here. The revised near-term project includes:
- Red visibility zones (daylighting) (-20 parking spaces)
- Painted Safety Zones (-12 parking spaces)
- Back-in angled parking (+18 parking spaces) Kirkham to Lawton streets, west side only
- Signage improvements
- Refreshed and updated roadway striping
Together, the revised near-term proposal would remove 14 parking spaces over the entire 2-mile corridor.
Medium-Term Proposal
The SFMTA Board of Directors approved the near-term measures on Tuesday, July 16, 2019.

- Four speed tables at Irving, Ortega, Santiago, and Ulloa streets
- A median island at Lawton Street
- Stop signs on side streets where they intersect Lower Great Highway (for traffic on Moraga, Ortega, Ulloa, Cutler, and Wawona; no stop signs are proposed for traffic on Lower Great Highway itself)
