Geary Rapid Project Construction Forecast: June 20 - July 3, 2020

As part of the Geary Rapid Project, work to replace aging water and sewer lines, in coordination with San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, continues. Surface transportation improvements, including upgraded traffic signals and streetlights, sidewalk extensions at bus stops and intersection corners, improved median refuges and roadway repaving, are also beginning and are being managed by San Francisco Public Works. 

Geary Rapid Project construction is currently scheduled to continue during the shelter in place order, with crews observing social distancing requirements and a safe working environment. The following two-week construction forecast is subject to change due to weather delays or unexpected field conditions.

Stanyan Street – Franklin Street
Mondays through Fridays between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.:

  • Water main connection and testing is planned for the weeks of June 22 and June 29 on eastbound Geary Boulevard from Webster to Laguna streets.
    • Water service to some properties may be briefly shut off while SFPUC connects to the new water main on Geary. SFPUC will notify properties in advance of any service interruption. To minimize disruption, work is sometimes conducted at night.
  • Sewer main installation is planned for the weeks of June 22 and June 29 on westbound Geary Boulevard from Laguna to Gough streets.
  • Concrete roadway base work is planned for the weeks of June 22 and June 29 on Geary Boulevard from Masonic to Divisadero streets and from Laguna to Gough streets.
  • Traffic signal and streetlight work is planned for the weeks of June 22 and June 29 at the following intersections: Divisadero Street, Scott Street and Steiner Street.
  • Minor sewer work is planned for the weeks of June 22 and June 29 at the Parker Avenue, Lyon Street and Scott Street intersections.
  • Curb ramp and sidewalk extension work is planned for the weeks of June 22 and June 29 on Geary Boulevard at the Collins Street, Wood Street, Divisadero Street and Scott Street intersections.

Van Ness Avenue – Market Street
Mondays through Fridays between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.:

  • Water main work is planned for the weeks of June 22 and June 29 on Geary Street between Polk and Jones streets (service connections) and between Powell and Stockton streets (main pipe installation).
    • During active water work, the outbound 38/inbound 19 bus stop on Geary at Larkin will be temporarily relocated west towards Polk Street. Look for “Board Here” signs nearby.
    • Water service to some properties may be briefly shut off while SFPUC connects to the new water main on Geary. SFPUC will notify properties in advance of any service interruption. To minimize disruption, work is sometimes conducted at night.
  • Roadway and sidewalk work is planned for the weeks of June 22 and June 29 at the intersections of O’Farrell and Leavenworth streets, and on O’Farrell between Jones and Taylor streets and between Stockton and Grant streets
    • During active work, the inbound 38/38R Geary bus stop on O’Farrell between Jones and Taylor will be temporarily relocated east towards Taylor Street. The bus stop on O’Farrell between Stockton and Grant will be temporarily relocated west towards Stockton Street. Look for “Board Here” signs nearby.
  • The traffic signal system at the intersection of O'Farrell and Leavenworth streets is planned to be upgraded on Wednesday, June 24.

Some parking will be temporarily restricted in construction zones and traffic lanes will be modified during active work. There may be brief vibrations during sidewalk and roadway excavation.

COVID-19 Muni Core Service Plan

Due to staffing shortages, the SFMTA has made some necessary service reductions during the order to shelter in place. Core Service bus routes are operating daily from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. A reduced Owl network is operating at an earlier start time, from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Visit SFMTA’s COVID-19 page for the latest service and citation information.

Please practice physical distancing when waiting for, boarding, and riding Muni, and wear face coverings on Muni, per the citywide public health order.


The following 38/38R bus stops are planned to be temporarily relocated. These changes are part of work that is unrelated to the Geary Rapid Project.

  • Mondays - Sundays, March 27 – August 30, all day:
    The inbound 38/38R Geary bus stop on O'Farrell Street at Van Ness Avenue will be temporarily relocated west towards Franklin Street while work related to the Van Ness Improvement Project is performed.
