Construction will start next month on Van Ness Avenue and Polk Street to begin the transformation of two major, parallel streets that could change how you get around San Francisco. Next week, we invite you to join us at an open house to learn about the construction impacts.
The Polk Streetscape Project and Van Ness Improvement Project are both multi-year construction efforts that will make these streets safer and provide more choices to get around, with new raised bicycle lanes on Polk and San Francisco’s first bus rapid transit system on Van Ness. We will also replace about two miles of water and sewer lines installed beneath both streets in the 1800s.
At their core, both projects have a lot in common. The construction impacts on each street, however, will be different.
While Polk’s traffic lanes will remain open during construction, the lanes on Van Ness will be reduced to two in each direction to provide the space needed for construction equipment and work. Most left turns from Van Ness will also be prohibited at the start of construction to improve safety and to keep traffic moving.
Most of the construction on both streets will occur on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Although night work is not expected on Polk, it will be necessary on Van Ness to minimize traffic disruption, as crews will need additional roadway space to safely remove trees in the median. Neighbors will be notified in advance of any work to be done outside of normal hours.
Next Wednesday, we’ll be available to share full details on these projects and their construction impacts at an open house meeting.
