Bus Wash System Replacement Project

Thanks to the continued support from the neighbors and community stakeholders, the Bus Wash System Replacement Project at Muni Woods is progressing smoothly. We are pleased to let you know that we have finished most of the noisy work that has caused concerns from neighbors in the past few months.

So far we have completed the following tasks:

  • Installation of underground and above-ground utilities
  • Demolition of old bus wash equipment
  • Pouring of new concrete slab
  • Repairing the reclaim tank
  • Delivery of all bus wash equipment

The contract allows the contractor to complete the construction in nine months. With continued supply chain issues, we anticipate to substantially complete the work in early 2023.

Bus Washer

Construction to replace and upgrade the bus wash system at Muni Woods Division is set to begin the first week of June 2022. Upon completion, the upgraded structure will be able to wash the 40” and 60” long hybrid and battery electric buses used to provide transit service. The Bus Wash System Replacement Project is part of our ongoing effort to improve transit service and functionality of the Muni work environments.

Scope of Work: The project entails replacing the existing bus wash and water reclamation systems. Work scope includes selective demolition of the existing structure, transportation and disposal of the site soils and materials, and replacement of the mechanical, plumbing, electrical and bus wash equipment.

Minimal Impact: Construction is scheduled to last approximately nine months. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. All the work is limited within the bus maintenance yard and does not directly impact transit service or the public right of way. Measures will be taken to limit noise and dust during the construction phase. There is no night work scheduled.

Heavier Bus Traffic: The Woods Bus Yard, with 260 vehicles stationed and maintained in it, has the biggest bus feet to serve the city. To make sure buses are in a good operating condition, buses will be transported from Woods to Islais Creek Bus Yard to receive much-needed maintenance and cleaning. There are about 40 to 60 additional buses per day traveling between the two bus yards on Indiana Street. Heavier bus traffic is expected from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily for the duration of the project.

Thank you for your patience and understanding while we improve the Muni system.
