We're celebrating 10 years of Muni Forward! Pick up a limited-edition Muni Forward Passport at a Transit Month event or participating business while supplies last during the month of September 2024. Use the passport to explore ten of Muni Forward’s project corridors, including the 30 Stockton.
The 30 Stockton is one of Muni’s oldest and busiest routes. Since 2016, the Muni Forward program has made a series of improvements to the 30 Stockton. These changes benefit over 15,000 customers every weekday and more than 400,000 riders every month. The 30 Stockton serves one of the densest neighborhoods in North America, making stops in Chinatown, North Beach, Russian Hill and the Marina, before reaching its terminus near Presidio Tunnel Tops park.
It is also a historically eco-friendly line. The route began its life as an electric streetcar, rumbling through the city on rails. Today, the 30 Stockton is a trolley bus, which rolls from the Financial District all the way to Crissy Field on tires. However, unlike some buses, it still runs on electricity, which it draws from zero-emission overhead power lines and stores in its powerful battery.

Project Recap
Improvements made since 2016 include:
- Transit lanes on 3rd and 4th streets that allow the 30 Stockton to skirt past traffic
- The addition of transit bulbs along North Point, Columbus Avenue and Chestnut Street, as well as new pedestrian bulbs on Chestnut Street
- Quick build transit islands on 3rd Street that reduce boarding times
- Consolidating some closely spaced stops to reduce travel times
- A “queue jump” on Townsend Street that helps buses get ahead of general traffic at intersections
- Colorization of existing transit lanes on Stockton to support better compliance
These upgrades have made the route safer for people walking and more efficient for riders by increasing pedestrian visibility and cutting down on peak travel times.
Another significant improvement to the 30 Stockton is its extension to Crissy Field, which was achieved through investments in trolley buses with advanced battery technology that allow them to operate “off-wire”, running on battery power for longer distances.
Coaches on the 30 Stockton can now travel short distances without the need to stay in contact with the overhead electrical lines that power it. This has allowed Muni to extend the 30 Stockton into the Presidio without the disruptive addition of new power infrastructure.
In 2020, the 30 Stockton added several new “off-wire” stops in the Presidio along Mason Street, and the route now runs from Orcale Park to Crissy Field without burning a drop of fossil fuel.
