The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) releases the following upcoming event-related traffic and transit impacts for this holiday week from Thursday, Aug. 29 through Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024.

Labor Day Holiday Muni Service

Monday, Sept. 2 (Labor Day Holiday), Muni will operate on a Sunday schedule.

Parking Enforcement on Labor Day Holiday

Monday, Sept. 2 (Labor Day Holiday), parking meters (all meters including color capped), white zones, nightly street sweeping (street cleaning) and safety violations (no stopping, no parking, red and blue zones) will be enforced.

Other SFMTA parking programs will not be enforced:

  • Residential Parking Permits (RPP) Zones
  • General Parking Time Limits
  • Weekday Daytime Street Sweeping (Street Cleaning)
  • Commuter Shuttle Towaway Zones
  • Unmetered Yellow and Green Zones

Vehicles creating a hazard and/or an unsafe condition (i.e. double parking, blocking a bike lane, blocking driveways, blocking crosswalks, fire hydrants, etc.) are subject to receiving citations and can possibly be towed.

Note: Parking meters in the city are enforced Monday through Saturday with exception of the following areas where parking meters are enforced seven days per week throughout the year except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day:

  • Parking meters in the Fisherman’s Wharf area
  • On and near The Embarcadero roadway
  • In the Special Event Area around Oracle Park and Chase Center
  • Five metered off-street parking facilities listed below:
    • 8th Avenue at Clement Street
    • 9th Avenue at Clement Street
    • Geary Boulevard at 21st Avenue
    • 18th Avenue at Geary Boulevard
    • Pierce Street Garage (between Lombard and Chestnut streets)

Sunset Night Market

Friday, Aug. 30: The Sunset Night Market is a free, all-ages street events featuring food and retail vendors, kids activities, local music and performances. The event will take place on Irving Street between 19th and 26 avenues, from 5 to 10 p.m. and will repeat on Friday, Sept. 27.

The following street closures will be required from 10 a.m. to 11:59 p.m., Friday:

  • Irving Street between 19th and 26th avenues
  • Intersections closed: 21st, 23rd, 24th, and 25th avenues on Irving Street

The intersections at 20th and 22nd avenues on Irving Street will remain open

The 7 Haight/Noriega Muni route will be impacted.

San Francisco Giants Baseball Games

Friday, Aug. 30 through Thursday, Sept. 5: The San Francisco Giants will play six home games at the ballpark. Listed below are start times for these games:

  • Three games against the Miami Marlins: 1) 7:15 p.m., Friday, Aug. 30; 2) 6:05 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 31; and 3) 1:05 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 1.
  • Three games against the Arizona Diamondbacks: 1) 6:45 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 3; 2) 6:45 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 4; and 3) 12:45 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 5.

Street Closures

To accommodate events that will take place at the ballpark, the following street closures will be enforced:

  • Two and a half hours before the opening pitch, the SFMTA will close eastbound King Street between 3rd and 2nd streets to vehicle traffic. King Street will reopen after first pitch until the seventh inning.
  • From the seventh inning until post-game traffic dies down, the SFMTA will again close eastbound King Street between 3rd and 2nd streets to vehicle traffic in order to reduce congestion on city streets.
  • Additionally, the northbound portion of the 4th Street Bridge (Peter R. Maloney Bridge) will be closed to all traffic except Muni, taxis and bicycles during the post-game period.

Taxi Stands

  • 2nd Street, west side, between Brannan and King Streets
  • 2nd Street, east side, between Townsend and King Streets
  • 3rd Street, west side, north of King Street

Special Event Parking Rates

During baseball games and other major events with more than 10,000 expected attendees at the ballpark, parking meters close to the ballpark will charge a special event rate of $11 per hour. These rates help reduce congestion and keep parking spots available in the neighborhoods near the ballpark, discouraging circling for free or cheap parking. Start times for special event rates vary based on the start time of the event. Events at Chase Center

Saturday, Aug. 31 to Sunday, Sept. 1: There will be multiple events to take place at Chase Center:

  • Saturday, Aug. 31: Performance by Grammy-award winning artist, Peso Pluma, will take place. Concert willstart time at 8:30 p.m. Doors will open at 7 p.m.
  • Sunday, Sept. 1: Performance by Jeff Lynne will take place. Concert will start at 8 p.m. Doors will open at 7 p.m.

Supplemental Muni Service

  • Muni will operate supplemental 78X Arena Express service.
  • Pre-event express shuttle service from 16th Street BART Station to Chase Center will start two and a half hours before each game/event and will end one hour after game/event starts.
  • Post-event express shuttle service from Chase Center on 16th Street to 16th Street BART Station will run until the area clears.

Street Closures

To accommodate events that will take place at the arena, the following street closures will be enforced two hours before and one hour after each event:

  • 16th Street between 3rd Street and Terry Francois Boulevard
  • Warriors Way between 3rd Street and Terry Francois Boulevard
  • Northbound 3rd Street between 16th Street and Warriors Way will also be closed approximately 30 minutes before and 45 minutes after an event.
  • Only local access will be allowed on Northbound Illinois Street between Mariposa and 16th streets.

No Parking Zone

To facilitate loading and pick up for Muni customers and patrons, NO PARKING will be in effect at these locations during events:

  • 16th Street between 3rd Street and Terry Francois Boulevard
  • Warriors Way between 3rd Street and Terry Francois Boulevard
  • Between the 500 and 700 blocks of Terry Francois Boulevard (TFB)

Taxi Stands

There is one taxi stand located on southbound Terry Francois Boulevard.

Ramp Taxis should use the loading zone on eastbound Warriors Way at Bridgeview Way.

Additional Passenger Loading

  • 4th Street which connects to Chase Center via Gene Friend Way pedestrian path which cuts through UCSF campus.
  • Owens Street connects to Chase Center via Gene Friend Way pedestrian path which cuts through UCSF campus.

Bar Iris Block Party

Sunday, Sept. 1: Bar Iris will hold its annual block party.

A street closure of Polk Street between Union and Green streets will be in effect from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 1.

The 19 Polk Muni route will be impacted.

Giro di San Francisco

Monday, Sept. 2: The annual Giro di San Francisco bicycle race will take place on Labor Day holiday.

The following street closures will be required from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 2:

  • Battery Street between Vallejo Street and The Embarcadero
  • Sansome Street between Broadway and Greenwich Street
  • Greenwich Street between Sansome and Battery streets
  • Union Street between Sansome and Front streets
  • Green Street between Sansome and Front streets
  • Vallejo Street between Sansome and Front streets
  • Front between Union and Vallejo streets
  • Intersections closed: Sansome Street at Vallejo, Green, Union, Filbert and Greenwich streets
  • Battery Street at Embarcadero, Union, Green, and Vallejo streets
  • Front Street at Union, Green and Vallejo streets

There will be no impact on Muni service.

CONSTRUCTION WORK AND OTHER UPDATES

NEW: Twin Peaks Tunnel Closure for Upgrades

Thursday, Aug. 22 to Thursday, Aug. 29: Twin Peaks Tunnel will be closed for tunnel repairs. Train service for the K Ingleside and M Ocean View lines will be replaced by bus shuttles. The J Church, N Judah and T Third trains will not be affected.

During the closure:

  • West Portal and Forest Hill stations will be closed all day, Customers can use K, L or M bus shuttle substitutions on the surface.
  • M Buses and K Buses will run between Balboa Park and Church stations, including stops at West Portal, Forest Hill, Castro and Church.
  • L Buses will be extended to run between San Francisco Zoo and Church Street, including stops at West Portal, Forest Hill, Castro and Church.
  • S Shuttle trains will run extra service between Castro and Embarcadero stations, serving all stations in between.
  • J, N and T trains will run as usual. Transfer between underground Muni Metro trains and K, L and M buses at Church or Castro stations.

UPDATE: L Taraval Improvement Project—Segment B

The L Taraval Improvement Project is a multi-agency collaboration to improve safety, accessibility, and transit reliability, and to rehabilitate aging rails, utility lines and roadway pavement along the L Taraval line between Sunset Boulevard and 15th Avenue and on Ulloa Street near West Portal.

The L Taraval Improvement Project is on track to be completed this fall. The most disruptive work to replace sewer, water, rail lines, streetbase and repaving the entire corridor has been completed.

We are completing installation of boarding islands with railing and pavers, and adding landscaping, artwork and safety features such as high-visibility crosswalks. The traffic lights are complete and started three color operation at 17th, 18th, 22nd, 24th and 28th avenues.

Train testing is performed daily and will vary between the hours of 8 a.m. and 10 p.m.:

  • Saturday, Aug. 17 to Saturday, Sept. 28: Operator training
  • Thursday, Aug. 22 to Thursday, Aug. 29: No testing during Twin Peaks Tunnel Closure

Construction work is being performed at the following locations:

Taraval Street

  • 16th, 17th, 23rd, 25th, 27th, 29th, 31st, 32nd, 33rd, 36th avenues: Install and paint guard rails, pavers and landscaping in planters in boarding islands
  • 19th to 36th avenues: Removal of trees and tree planting

Ulloa

  • Forest side to 15th avenues: Tree planting

The following L Taraval bus stops are being relocated temporarily during construction:

  • L Taraval Bus / L Special / L Owl (Present to Fall 2024)
  • Inbound
    • From Taraval Street and 15th Avenue to the southeast side of the intersection

Masks Recommended

Masks are no longer required, but are encouraged in any SFMTA facilities, transit hubs or on vehicles including Muni buses, streetcars, light rail vehicles or cable cars or in taxis or on paratransit.

ONGOING: Essential Trip Card Discount Program

The SFMTA’s program, Essential Trip Card (ETC) Program, assists people with disabilities and older adults to make essential trips using taxis. The program provides two to three round trips at an 80% discount per month, i.e. rider pays $6 to receive a value of $30 or pays $12 to receive a $60 value. If essential needs require it, riders may receive additional value up to $120 of taxi service per month.

To qualify for the program, customer must be either age 65 or older or an adult with disabilities. Eligible adults may apply for the ETC program by calling the Paratransit Mobility Management office at 415-351-7053.
