The L Taraval Improvement Project is a multi-agency collaboration to improve safety, accessibility, and transit reliability, and to rehabilitate aging rails, utility lines and roadway pavement along the L Taraval line between Sunset Boulevard and 15th Avenue and on Ulloa Street near West Portal.

The L Taraval Improvement Project has been substantially completed! The SFMTA would like to thank our community partners, residents and merchants for their support and patience throughout the project design and construction.

L Taraval Train Service Returns

Trains will run on 10-minute frequencies on weekdays and 12-minutes on weekends. Board trains at the platform or street instead of using the buses at the curb. L Bus service will be discontinued.

The initial trains will start from the following points:

  • First Inbound trips from Wawona Street and 46th Avenue
  • At 6 a.m., the first trip traveling eastbound from the Zoo will change to an M Ocean View outbound train at West Portal and will head back to Balboa Park (Note: This is a special arrangement for the first trip leaving the Zoo on Saturdays due to subway will not open until 8 a.m. on weekends).

Community Appreciation Event and Movies at McCoppin

For dates and times for the other movies in McCoppin films, including Turning Red, The Little Mermaid, and Barbie, visit the Movies in McCoppin website.

A Better, Safer Taraval

The L Taraval Improvement Project was a multi-agency effort between the SFMTA, San Francisco Public Utilities Commission and San Francisco Public Works to upgrade and add new infrastructure along the L Taraval line between West Portal and the Zoo.

While the biggest work is behind us, there are still a few smaller “punch list” items remaining, such as adjusting utility lines, refreshing transit lane paint, boarding island grout work, removing construction materials and installing transit shelters.

San Francisco residents and Muni riders will soon enjoy the new Taraval Street, from West Portal to Parkside, and to the beach, with a safer, more reliable ride.

For additional project details, visit SFMTA.com/LTaravalProject. For construction updates and more information from Monday, Sept 30 through Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024, visit the Project Update page.
