Jeff Tumlin has left the SFMTA after five years with our agency. His last day was Dec. 31, 2024.
It’s January 2025, and we have said goodbye to Director of Transportation Jeff Tumlin. Director Tumlin announced in mid-December that he would not renew his contract and instead would step down from his position at the end of the year.
“Thank You, Jeff Tumlin” is the latest episode of our Taken with Transportation podcast. In it, we talk with our former director about his time at the agency.
Reflecting on the last five years
“I started this job on Dec. 15, 2019. Three months later, we were in lockdown,” Director Tumlin tells Taken with Transportation Host Melissa Culross. “It was amazing watching the Emergency Operations Center come together. But it was particularly amazing watching our people show up.”
Director Tumlin discusses some of the agency’s accomplishments during his tenure. “There’s the whole suite of projects … that have allowed Muni to be faster, more frequent and more reliable than it has been in decades,” he says.
Jeff Tumlin often gets around the city by biking or taking Muni.
What the staff says about Director Tumlin
“Thank You, Jeff Tumlin” also features interviews with staff members who discuss the internal work the director did. “The biggest impact is that he changed our culture,” says SFMTA Customer Experience Project Manager Ammee Alvior. “And that’s hard to do in a public agency.”
“I think we all know that Jeff is very passionate about San Francisco streets and San Francisco transit,” SFMTA Streets Director Viktoriya Wise adds. Wise served as Director Tumlin’s chief of staff during much of his time in the job. “But what I also know about Jeff is that he is just as passionate, if not more, about staff development and mentorship.”
