The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency has canceled the Sunset Tunnel construction planned for the August 22 weekend. The SFMTA is giving the contractor additional time to adequately prepare his work plan to ensure that service will resume at start of service on Monday morning.
Over the weekend, the N Judah rail service will continue to operate as scheduled for subway early shutdown during the Muni subway system upgrade construction. Although the subway is closed nightly from 10 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. for subway upgrade construction, the N Judah trains will still operate outside of the subway between Church & Duboce and Ocean Beach from about 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. In order to provide easier and more convenient service to customers, the inbound J will continue as the outbound N and the inbound N will continue as the outbound J at Church & Duboce. Customers can transfer to the bus shuttle at Market and Church streets to continue their trip to downtown.
The next tentative construction dates for the Sunset Tunnel are the weekends of Sept. 12, Sept. 19, Oct. 17, Oct. 24, Nov. 7, Nov. 14 and Nov. 21. Future construction work will start at 2 a.m. on Saturday. These dates are subject to change due to unforeseen conditions.
Thank you for your understanding and patience while we work to improve your Muni system. By replacing the aging track and other infrastructure inside the tunnel, the Sunset Tunnel Trackway Replacement Project will help improve safety and reliability of the N Judah rail service for Muni customers.
