N Judah Muni Forward

プロジェクトの紹介 (Project Introduction)

A future Muni Forward project would aim to address key concerns for tens of thousands of daily riders, such as reliability, safety, crowding and customer experience on the N Judah, Muni's busiest light rail line. The project would be shaped through a community-driven planning process to determine priorities and potential project features.

Project Background

The N Judah was identified for transit reliability and safety improvements as part of the Transit Effectiveness Project (TEP), a comprehensive study of the Muni system completed in 2014. With funding from the Proposition A bond approved by voters in November 2014, the SFMTA has delivered reliability, safety, accessibility, streetscape and maintenance improvements at many locations along the N Judah:

  • In the Inner Sunset and Cole Valley, we installed upgraded boarding islands and transit bulbs, wider sidewalks at corners, transit priority signals and streetscape enhancements. Additionally, we replaced worn rail and train power lines and repaved the street
  • Transit signal priority was installed at nine intersections to hold the light green longer when trains are approaching. This reduces unnecessary delays for riders
  • Boarding islands were lengthened and upgraded with wheelchair accessible-stops on Judah Street at 28th Avenue
  • Existing transit lanes were colorized with red on short sections of Judah Street near 9th and 19th avenues
  • The Sunset Tunnel Trackway Improvement Project replaced worn rail in the Sunset Tunnel
  • Safety improvements were recently approved at the N Judah turnaround at the Great Highway
  • The “Fix-It! Week” subway maintenance program has helped to reduce travel times and improve reliability on the N Judah and other Muni Metro lines
  • An earlier project constructed transit reliability, safety and streetscape enhancements on Duboce Avenue in 2012, as well as replacing rail

Building on this previous work to enhance the N Judah for Muni riders, we plan to take a fresh look at the line beginning in 2024, in close collaboration with community stakeholders. Please stay tuned for further updates in the year ahead, including a listening tour focused on developing a community-driven, longer-term vision for the N Judah corridor for 2030 and beyond.
