SFMTA Awards its first Bus Rapid Transit Construction Contract
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) Board of Directors awarded Walsh Construction Company the initial construction contract of the Van Ness Corridor Transit Improvement Project on July 7, San Francisco’s first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system that will run on Van Ness Avenue between Lombard and Mission streets.
Now that the contract has been awarded, the Van Ness Corridor Transit Improvement Project Team and Walsh Construction Company will work to develop an appropriate construction schedule, design a traffic management plan, and work with the residents and businesses on the Van Ness Corridor to prepare for construction. Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2016.
Tree Hearing Notices Posted
This Friday, July 24, Public Works will be posting public notices on the trees being replaced along the Van Ness Avenue as a part of the Van Ness Corridor Transit Improvement Project.
To enhance the urban design of the corridor, 400 trees will be planted along Van Ness Avenue once construction is complete, more than doubling the existing 193 trees.
The Public Hearing is scheduled for Monday, August 24, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at City Hall, Room 416. If approved, the proposed tree removals would coincide with construction, scheduled to begin early 2016. Tree removals may also be phased during the construction period as needed to reduce the impact to the local community. Once construction has been completed on the Van Ness Corridor Transit Improvement Project, replacement trees will be planted.
