Shared Electric Moped Parking Permit Program

プロジェクトの紹介 (Project Introduction)

PLEASE NOTE: There are presently no permitees under this program – Revel has ceased shared moped operations effective 11/18/23

The Shared Electric Moped Parking Permit Program grants qualified entities parking permits that exempt shared electric mopeds from certain street parking regulations.

Shared electric mopeds (e-mopeds) that display these permit stickers are exempted from:

  • Residential Parking Permit time restrictions
  • Payment in metered motorcycle parking stalls
  • Payment in metered parallel parking spaces, if parked on the line between spaces, or in front of the parking meter (if there is no line)

Permit Conditions

  • These permits are only available to Shared Electric Moped Organizations which provide pre-approved members access to a citywide network of at least 100 shared e-mopeds.
  • Each permit costs $107 per year. Like Residential Parking Permits, the rate is set to cover the estimated cost to administer and enforce the program.
  • Permitted providers are required to share data on e-moped usage and parking to help the SFMTA address issues (e.g. parking stagnation, parking congestion) as needed.

About Shared E-Mopeds

Shared e-moped service is offered in San Francisco by Revel Transit, providing short-term use of electric mopeds in free-floating fashion – a trip can begin and end anywhere within the operator's defined service area. Revel's shared e-mopeds are rented with a smartphone app. They're priced for short trips within San Francisco, and between users they’re parked at the curb or in a parking lot or garage. Like other mopeds and motorcycles, they can be parked in the small curb spaces between cars or short "scrap" curb segments between driveways.

Program Approval

The Shared Electric Moped Parking Permit Program was approved by the SFMTA Board of Directors at its June 20 2017 meeting. The board voted to lift an 8-foot curb space limit (a condition of an earlier trial policy) and exempted permitted shared e-mopeds from time limits in Residential Parking Permit areas (like a conventional RPP permit).

Ongoing Improvement

We continue to evaluate the program’s effectiveness for any adjustments needed using data on e-moped usage from Scoot and Revel, SFMTA's real-time data on parking usage from meters, and other other input and observations. Using that data, we look to determine where demand for motorcycle parking is growing and propose new spaces where they’re needed.

Shared E-Mopeds: Part of the Solution

Shared e-mopeds aren't just scooters to rent for fun – they're a piece of the puzzle to making it easier for us all to get around.

Through our evaluation of surveys and data on travel patterns, we've found that they provide residents an affordable, flexible transportation option that reduces traffic congestion, produces no local greenhouse gas emissions and makes it easier for people to get around without owning a private vehicle.

That last part is key. When San Franciscans have shared vehicles conveniently available, it's easier for them to sell their car or forego buying one, which helps reduce congestion and keep parking spaces open for those who need them most.
