We invite you to join us for a special summer series: Muni Discovery Days.

The program aims to educate and excite San Francisco youth of all ages about Muni and the free services available to all young riders. Attendees who are 10 years old or younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

We're partnering with the San Francisco Public Library on each event in the series.

Join us:

  • Friday, Aug. 2: Event starts at 1 p.m. at the Glen Park Library. From there, we'll ride Muni together to the Bernal Heights Library, where the event will end at 4 p.m.
  • Friday, Aug. 16: Event starts at 1 p.m. at the Ocean View Library. From there, we'll ride Muni together to the Sunset Library, where the event will end at 4 p.m.

Muni Discovery Days: what to expect

During these summer events, youth and their families will get to:

  • Learn from the pros. Muni staff will talk with the youth about the rules and etiquette of riding public transit in San Francisco.
  • Hear from transit authors and artists. The author of Muni is My Ride will give a presentation. The artists behind the Muni Raised Me bus will also showcase their art installation at the second library we'll travel to together.
  • Make art and learn history. Library staff will host hands-on art activities. They'll also share more about the history of public transportation in San Francisco.
  • Take Muni as a group. After a few activities, we'll ride Muni together to a second library. Young people will get to see how our transit network supports people in their community, regardless of their ability or identity.

Through these experiences, young folks can put faces and names to the hands that keep the city moving. They'll learn how to ride Muni in a safe manner and see the world that opens to young riders once they can navigate our transit network.

Highlights from the first Muni Discovery Day

These August events are the last in our summer series. We held our first Muni Discovery Day on June 28 at the Bayview Library.

Participants made Muni-related arts and crafts. They also listened to an SFMTA speaker panel and learned about the making of the book Muni is My Ride from its author.

Next, they joined us on the 44 O'Shaughnessy bus. We traveled together to reach the Excelsior Library.

A personal perspective

Libraries have always been some of my favorite places as they’re one of the few indoor public spaces where you’re not expected to spend money. I come from a poor and proud working-class family of immigrants. As a child, libraries became one of the first spaces where I was able to learn about the culture of the United States.

Because of this, and for many more reasons, I am proud and honored to help young people learn about Muni in these special spaces.

Please join us for these events. Like any library or public transportation vehicle, all are welcome!
