The Muni Service Equity Strategy is one component of the agency's commitment to making transit accessible and affordable to all of our customers.
The Equity Strategy will benefit eight selected Equity Strategy Neighborhoods, seniors and people with disabilities, by implementing two to three service treatments that can be implemented within one to two years, while delivering measurable improvements in connectivity to key destinations, reliability, frequency and crowding. Moreover, the strategy will establish a performance baseline for Muni routes serving each Equity Strategy Neighborhood, which will be monitored annually.
The SFMTA Board adopted the Muni Service Equity Policy in 2014 and the neighborhoods were selected based on the percentage of households with low incomes, private vehicle ownership and race and ethnicity demographics. The Strategy was developed jointly with transportation equity and affordable housing advocates, who continue to advise the SFMTA.
Over the past few months, the SFMTA collected feedback from many Muni customers about Muni service performance improvements they'd like prioritized (such as reducing gaps in service, reducing travel time and crowding, and others). Based on what was heard, SFMTA staff developed the following preliminary recommendations for Muni service improvements:
Bayview and Visitacion Valley Recommendations
Oceanview and Ingleside Recommendations
Outer Mission and Excelsior Recommendations
South of Market and Tenderloin Recommendations
Western Addition Recommendations
These preliminary recommendations were recently presented last month at community meetings and events within the Equity Strategy Neighborhoods for feedback.
On March 20, the 2018 Muni Service Equity Strategy will be presented to the SFMTA Board of Directors before the development of the fiscal years 2019 and 2020 capital and operating budget.
