Residents without off-street parking will find it a little easier to charge electric vehicles (EV) after the city’s first two curbside charging stations went live last week at 55 Fillmore Street in Duboce Triangle.

The charging stations are the first in the city’s Curbside EV Charging Pilot, a program jointly run by the SFMTA, the Department of Public Works, the Public Utilities Commission and the San Francisco Environment Department.

The goal of the pilot is to make EV charging more accessible, especially for people who live in apartment buildings, condominiums and other multi-family housing. If the pilot is successful, the city plans to install more than 1,500 public EV chargers citywide by 2030.

The SFMTA unveiled the first two chargers at an event on April 25, attended by Rafael Mandelman, president of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, city department heads and industry and nonprofit leaders.

“Environmental stewardship is in our DNA,” SFMTA Director of Transportation Julie Kirschbaum said, adding, “We’ve made Muni the greenest fleet in North America, and we’re excited to be partnering with other city agencies to make driving in electric vehicles another environmentally friendly option for getting around San Francisco.

“No matter how you travel around the city, you should be able to do it in a way that’s gentle on our planet,” she said.

“By bringing EV charging directly to the curb, the pilot supports practical, everyday use,” Kirschbaum said. The new chargers will complement off-street charging already available in SFMTA garages across the city, she said.

“Expanding EV ownership is one of the fastest ways to decarbonize the transportation sector and support the city’s goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2040,” Kirschbaum said. “Providing convenient access to EV owners to charge their vehicles will make the transition an easier choice.”

The SFMTA board approved the Duboce Triangle location at its April 15 meeting. The city agencies will work with our EV charging providers to monitor usage, demand and other metrics.  These partners include Urban EV, it’s electric and Voltpost. Analysis of the data will inform curbside charging’s citywide implementation.

The pilot program also will study how public charging infrastructure can contribute to health, equity and mobility benefits. The pilot is expected to run for two years. Together with our partner agencies, we expect to release initial findings in a Curbside Charging Feasibility Study later this spring.

“A clean transportation system depends on every way of getting around being safe, convenient and accessible, whether that’s walking, biking, taking Muni, using a scooter or e-bike or driving an EV,” Kirschbaum said last week.

“Curbside charging adds to the infrastructure needed to make those climate-friendly choices easier today, while supporting the growing number of San Franciscans who already rely on EVs,” she said.
