Bikeway closed on Valencia Street

We would like to provide you with an update on the ongoing construction progress of the center-running protected bikeway project on Valencia Street. Our crews have been working diligently to implement this important initiative, and we are excited to share the latest developments.

Significant progress has been made in the implementation of the bikeway, with one major accomplishment being the installation of bus lane curbs. These curbs serve as a protective buffer for the bikeway, enhancing safety for cyclists.  Bus lane curbs have been installed between 23rd and 20th streets, with work currently on-going between 20th Street and 19th Street.

In addition, our crews have been actively working on implementing the supporting curb management changes. Starting from 15th Street and progressing southward, improvements have been made up to 17th Street and some adjacent side streets. These curb management changes will optimize the availability of curbside space for loading and commercial activity.

Additionally, emergency sewer repair work is taking place on Valencia Street between 18th and 19th streets by the SFPUC. This work is to address sinkage in the roadway and is unrelated to the mid-Valencia pilot construction.

Looking ahead, our focus is to complete construction of the full pilot from 15th Street to 23rd Street as quickly as possible, including bus lane curbs and “K-71” bollards. Furthermore, our SFMTA crews will continue to implement the curb management plan and make necessary signal modifications as part of the pilot design.

We have observed that some individuals on bikes have been entering the construction area and using the center-running protected bikeway. We kindly request community members to be mindful of the work zones and keep clear of the construction area. At present, the bikeway is closed for use, and people on bikes should utilize the vehicle travel lane, sharing the road with vehicles. Ensuring the work area remains clear is crucial for the safe and efficient implementation of the pilot design.

Temporary construction signage has been installed to clearly indicate that the bikeway is closed and advises cyclists to use the full vehicle travel lane for their travel needs. It is important to note that the bikeway is not yet ready for use, as not all of the protective materials are in place, and intersection treatments are still being installed.

We genuinely appreciate the patience and understanding of the community throughout this construction phase. We acknowledge that the transition period can be challenging, confusing, and frustrating for many. We want to assure you that we are doing our best to resolve the situation and open the bikeway for public use as soon as possible, with a target open for use date no later than July 30. Your cooperation during this time is invaluable, and we thank you for your understanding.

We will continue to provide regular updates as the project progresses. Thank you for your support and cooperation.
