Active Commute Resources

San Francisco is a great place to walk, bike, or scoot! Commuters get to experience an active commute and skip getting caught in traffic. Plan the best commute for you with these resources and use the SFMTA Trip Planner or your favorite trip planning tool to view the best routes for active commuters.

Walking

San Francisco's a walking city - short blocks and a dense street grid make connecting to your transit stop or reaching your destination easy. SFMTA is regularly working on improving the pedestrian experience whether you walk to work, to your local shops, or just for fun. Learn more about SFMTA’s Pedestrian Program.

Slow Streets

The SFMTA’s Slow Streets program reduces traffic on certain residential streets, increasing safety and comfort for people traveling by foot, bicycle or scooter. Throughout the city, nearly 19 corridors have been designated as a Slow Street. On these streets, signs and barricades have been placed to minimize vehicle traffic and prioritize walking and biking.

Bicycles and Scooters

San Francisco’s extensive bike lane network makes getting around town a breeze  whether you’re on a personal or shared bike or scooter. San Francisco has over 400 miles of bicycle routes including Recommended Bike Routes that combine Slow Streets, bike lanes, and physically-separated bikeways for a low-stress route to work.

Shared Options

If your employees don’t have a bike or scooter of their own, they can take advantage of shared micromobility options available across the City. Employers can help commuters by partnering with shared mobility providers who offer corporate discount programs.

Emergency Ride Home

The Emergency Ride Home program supports everyone who walks, bikes, carpools, takes transit, or rides shared-mobility to work. If you experience an emergency that day, you’re eligible for a free, guaranteed ride home. Share this program with your employees to support their commutes!

Do you offer pretax commuter benefits? Check with your benefits providers to see if you can offer pretax dollars for micromobility. Learn more about pretax commuter benefits here.
