MLK Weekend: Comic Arts and Film Festivals

Holiday Service and Parking Enforcement Reminder: For Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, January 15th Muni will operate on a Saturday schedule. Also on Monday, Parking Enforcement will not issue parking tickets for hour limits in residential permit areas, Monday-Friday daytime street sweeping, or tow cars in commuter tow-away zones while parking meters and 7-day night street sweeping will be enforced city wide.

Events:  This weekend will feature celebrations of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., including a Monday march beginning at Fourth and King streets, the Liberation Film Festival and the Black Comix Arts Festival. It is also the last weekend of the season for the Union Square ice skating rink, so don't miss your chance to get in one last day on the ice. Read more about our highlighted events below.

Black Comix Arts Festival

Saturday-Monday, various times
Downtown/Civic Center

A celebration of the comic creativity of African-Americans in the arts and popular culture, the Black Comix Arts Festival is dedicated to the idea of sharing their contributions with a diverse audience. The three-day event -- which begins at the Main Branch of the San Francisco Public Library-- features kids activities, film screenings, panel discussions, cosplay events and more and will culminate with a grand expo at Yerba Buena Gardens on Monday.


How to Get There on Muni: Celebrants may take any Muni Metro line to Civic Center station, the F Market and Wharves Line, as well as the 5 Fulton, 6 Haight/Parnassus, 7 Haight/Noriega, 8 Bayshore, 9 San Bruno, 12 Folsom/Pacific, 14 Mission/14R Mission Rapid, 19 Polk or 21 Hayes routes close to the event.

Muni Service Notes: There are no planned reroutes or other service changes for this event, though routes to the event may see minor delays or crowding due to possible increased ridership.

Liberation Film Festival

Sunday and Monday, various times
Downtown

Launched in 2011, the Liberation Film Festival takes advantage of the thousands of attendants to the city's annual MLK Day celebrations in order to bring human interest documentary works and short film features to fresh, broad audiences. Stop by the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts to enjoy multiple screenings throughout the day this Sunday and Monday.

Reminder: Third Street Bridge Rehabilitation Project

Now through Friday, January 26, 2018: The Third Street Bridge is undergoing counterweight maintenance in preparation for the upcoming Third Street Bridge Rehabilitation Project. During the construction period, a full closure of the Third Street Bridge is required. Access will be restricted to all vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians between Berry and Terry A. Francois streets, for 24 hours per day. Waterway access will remain open to watercraft traffic. Access to private or commercial buildings and pedestrian pathway on either side of the bridge will be maintained at all times, however, delays should be expected.

Travelers are encouraged to plan ahead and may consider alternate routes:

Southbound Travel

  • Pedestrians:  Use Bay Trail Path to 4th Street, then to Channel Street
  • People on Bikes:  Use Berry Street to 4th Street, then to Channel Street
  • Motorists:  Use King Street to Interstate 280 South, then to 18th Street

Northbound Travel

  • Pedestrians:  Use Channel Street to 4th Street, then to Bay Trail Path
  • People on Bikes:  Use Channel Street to 4th Street, then to Berry Street
  • Motorists:  Use 16th Street to 7th Street, then to Brannan Street

Construction scheduling is subject to change due to weather delays, equipment problems and/or unforeseen field conditions.
