Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Service Impacts: SoMa

Event Summary

San Francisco is proud to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference in November, the largest conference of global leaders in San Francisco in decades. More than 20,000 people are expected to attend this historic conference, including heads of state and dignitaries from over 20 member economies in Asia, the Pacific, North America and South America. Visit the APEC website (APEC2023SF.org) for further information about the conference. 

Due to security, areas around APEC events and activities will be closed to vehicles and people walking except for event attendees or people who live or work within the security boundaries.

Street Closures

Streets and freeway ramps around the Moscone Center will be closed Nov. 13 -19. These closures will result in significant traffic impacts. Those visiting the area are encouraged to take public transit. Drivers should expect delays and plan to give themselves extra time.

On-street parking will be unavailable within the security zone. SFMTA’s Moscone Center Garage and Fifth and Mission/Yerba Buena Garage will be closed for the duration of the event. Parking Control Officers and police officers will be helping to direct traffic.

• 3rd Street will be closed at Harrison Street. Drivers will detour to either Fremont or 6th Street to continue north across Market Street.
• Stockton Street will be closed at Ellis Street. Drivers will detour via Sutter, Mason, Eddy, and Cyril Magnin streets to cross Market Street at 5th Street.
• Montgomery Street will be closed at Market Street. Drivers will detour via Bush Street to cross Market Street at 1st Street or via Sutter, Mason, Eddy and Cyril Magnin streets to cross Market at 5th Street.
• Post Street will be closed at Market Street. Drivers will detour via Kearny and Bush streets to cross Market Street at 1st Street.
• Mission Street will be closed between 2nd and 5th streets. Eastbound traffic will be detoured to southbound 6th Street. Westbound traffic will detour to northbound Fremont Street.
• Howard Street will be closed between 2nd and 5th streets. Westbound traffic will detour to southbound 1st Street.
• Folsom Street will be closed between 5th and 2nd streets. Eastbound traffic will be detoured at 6th Street.
• I-80 eastbound off-ramp at 4th Street will be closed between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on conference days. The last San Francisco exit will be at 7th Street.
• I-80 westbound off-ramp at 5th Street will be closed between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on conference days. Drivers should use ramps at Fremont or 8th streets when ramps are closed.

Additional APEC-related events will take place in multiple locations. Some events may require a temporary security zone that will restrict traffic and may likewise require Muni reroutes. We will make information available as events are announced.

People Bicycling and Walking

People walking and riding bicycles are encouraged to go around the security zone to avoid security impacts.

People walking may use Market, 2nd, 5th and Harrison streets. People on bicycles may use bicycle lanes on Market, 2nd and 5th streets.

Muni Service Changes

Multiple Muni lines will need to be rerouted around the main conference security zone in SoMa from Nov. 13-19. The SFMTA developed reroutes to maintain as many connections as possible. Riders should be prepared to adjust travel and to allow more travel time. We understand that these changes will present some challenges and we appreciate your support and patience.

Cable car and Muni Metro service will be significantly impacted during this period as well.

Note: Vehicle predictions and third-party navigation apps may not display information properly during this period. We advise anyone traveling through San Francisco to allow ample extra time for travel and to be prepared for delays.
