The transportation sector's reliance on fossil fuels makes the sector the city’s largest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and criteria air pollutants. Along with mode shift away from single occupancy vehicles towards transit, walking and bicycling, strategic electrification of the transportation sector has the potential to reduce harmful emissions and air pollution. Achievement of these reductions depends, in part, on the electrification of private vehicles by establishing electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure network that is responsive to current and future demands, ensures consistency with key policies such as Transit First and public health and safety policies while providing equitable access across the city.
The vision for electric mobility projects is simple— help to advance San Francisco's vision of diverse and thriving neighborhoods seamlessly connected by safe, reliable, affordable transportation for all. Ideally, electric mobility projects will include collaboration opportunities to support a diversity of mobility options— particularly those that do not induce or generate new vehicle miles, prioritize equitable access, complement low-carbon modes of travel, integrate with facilities uses and demands, and enhance public safety and security.
EV Roadmap
In 2019, San Francisco published an EV Roadmap which outlines San Francisco's goal to make transportation 100% emissions-free by 2040 and the steps needed to get there. More information on the city's electric vehicle charging efforts is at the San Francisco Department of the Environment Electric Mobility webpage.
Battery Electric Bus Program
The SFMTA already has the greenest transit fleet in North America, and it's getting greener. In February 2022, the SFMTA rolled out the first of its new all-electric buses in a new pilot Battery-Electric Bus Program.
Electric Vehicle Charging Network
SFMTA’s Off Street Charging Network
The SFMTA has recently upgraded its publicly-accessible electric vehicle charging stations in the SFMTA garages and lots.
Curbside Charging Network
The City and County of San Francisco is expanding its EV charging. To date, the city has focused on off-street opportunities, but two efforts are advancing to provide on-street charging:
- Mayor's pilot
- Install and operate a curbside charging demonstration through the Curbside EV Charging Pilot Program.
- Feasibility Study
