Event Summary

Effective Saturday, October 14, some bus stops on Geary Boulevard between 25th and 3rd avenues are being removed or relocated to improve transit travel time and reliability as part of the Geary Boulevard Improvement Project.

  • The 38 local inbound and outbound bus stops at 12th Avenue are being discontinued. Board at Park Presidio or 9th Avenue.
  • Nine bus stops are being relocated across the street from the near-side to the far-side of the intersection, see below for details. Moving stops past the traffic signal to the far-side of the intersection helps buses take advantage of transit signal priority and makes them more likely to catch a green light.
  • The outbound stop at Geary & 6th Avenue will move to the west side of the intersection in 2025.

During this "Quick-Build" phase, an interim transit lane -- painted only with white lines -- will be installed, and these interim lanes will remain in place until the permanent red lane treatment can be applied after planned future underground utility work and street repaving is complete.

The Geary Boulevard Improvement Project aims to improve Muni’s 38 Geary and 38R Geary Rapid bus service and bring much-needed safety improvements to Geary Boulevard between 34th Avenue and Stanyan Street. As a part of any bus stop change, SFMTA considers factors such as distance between stops, average ridership, accessibility of next-closest stops and transfers for each bus stop. Refinements to the project design have been made in response to extensive outreach and community member input.
