Riders wait for a bus on Market Street

We’re asking for your feedback on a proposal for possible Muni service cuts.

In February, we shared that we will likely have to cut Muni service this summer due to a $50 million budget shortfall. We’re still not sure how much we’ll need to cut Muni service, but we’ve been asking community members for feedback so that we can minimize impacts if we do need to make cuts.

We heard feedback from thousands of community members about three possible approaches to cutting service. With this feedback in mind, we created a proposal for possible Muni service cuts this summer. This proposal reduces the cuts by about half. Our goal is to ensure service changes are as minimally disruptive as possible.

We will present the updated proposal at our March 18 Board of Directors meeting. We welcome you to review it and share feedback before or during that meeting.

What’s in the proposal

Based on feedback, our proposal aims to save money by focusing on areas where several buses routes and train lines overlap. For example, many buses and trains serve Market Street. We can cut costs by ending some of those bus routes at Market Street. There, riders can reach the same stops by another bus or train. Learn more at our Summer 2025 Muni Service Cuts webpage

Previous approaches

We sought feedback on three possible approaches to cutting service based on different goals:

  • Preserving high ridership routes
  • Maintaining all existing connections, or

What we heard

Since then, we’ve received feedback from thousands of community members. We collected feedback through:

  • Tabling at busy Muni stops
  • Presenting at SFMTA Board and community meetings
  • Phone calls and voicemails at 415.646.2005
  • Responses to an online multilingual feedback form

Overwhelmingly, the feedback we heard was to not cut Muni service. There was no consensus on whether to focus on maintaining frequency or connections. We know these are difficult choices and we’re going to do our best to create a proposal that balances the needs of different communities. We appreciate your help as we work to reduce the impacts of possible service cuts.
