Introduksyon sa Proyekto (Project Introduction)

The 4th Street Pedestrian Safety Project aims to help people walk across 4th Street, Bryant Street, and Harrison Street in San Francisco's South of Market neighborhood (SoMa). This area is part of the Vision Zero High-Injury Network, which includes the 12% of streets in San Francisco where 68% of serious and deadly traffic accidents happen.

Project Goals

The main goal of the 4th Street Pedestrian Safety Project is to make it safer and easier for people to cross two busy intersections. Here are some of the improvements we plan to make:

  • Build pedestrian bulb-outs, which are extensions of the sidewalk that shorten the distance people have to walk and help them be seen better by drivers.
  • Add a new pedestrian crossing at 4th and Harrison Streets, right where the I-80 on-ramp is.
  • Introduce a new left-turn signal on Harrison Street at 4th Street, allowing people to cross safely without worrying about cars coming through while they are walking in the crosswalk.

Additionally, the project will improve the area by installing better stormwater drainage, new street lights, and other necessary roadway fixes. To fit the sidewalk extensions and improve pedestrian safety, this project will also remove eight metered parking spaces.

Project History

The 4th Street corridor was redesigned at the same time as the Central Subway project. Many upgrades were made then to enhance access for transit users, pedestrians, and bicyclists. The 4th Street Pedestrian Safety Project is the last part of these improvements that still needs to be built.
