Boarding Island Demolition Soon at Westgate Drive and Cerritos Avenue Stops

Share this:

Beginning Friday, January 17, we will begin demolishing the two out of service boarding islands on Ocean Avenue at Westgate Drive and Cerritos Avenue. Construction is subject to weather conditions.

We plan to work first on the eastbound island beginning January 17 and the westbound island after. We expect that demolition and pavement restoration will last up to four days for each island and will take place between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays and Saturdays.

Muni Service Impacts:

Traffic Impacts:

  • While each island is being demolished, one lane of traffic will closed, but we expect one lane to remain open throughout construction. We do not expect impacts to traffic in the opposite direction.

Noise impacts:

  • There will likely be some noise during excavation work.

Parking impacts:

  • Following demolition, the SFMTA will remove the nearby ‘no parking signage,’ which will add several new on-street parking spaces on Ocean Avenue. This sign removal should take place within a few weeks of the demolition work.

This demolition is taking place after permanently removing these K Ingleside stops in September. Removing these stops from service is helping achieve the K Ingleside Rapid Project’s goals of improving reliability and travel times on the train line. This pair of stops had the lowest ridership on the corridor. The stops are just a block from the stops at Aptos Avenue, which is closer to destinations like Aptos Middle School and Aptos Park.

Longer Green Lights for Ocean Avenue Soon

By the end of January 2025, we also expect to perform an update to traffic signal timing on Ocean Avenue, which will give traffic on Ocean Avenue longer green lights. This change is part of our work to ease congestion and keep moving traffic and trains moving on Ocean Avenue.

Additionally, we will be retiming several traffic lights to allow for longer crosswalk times. This change will give enough time to cross for people who walk slower and will improve safety for people walking.

There are no expected impacts to traffic or Muni service during this signal timing update.
