Vehicle restrictions and transit lanes now in effect
During the week of September 30, crews installed signage and paint to put new vehicle restrictions and transit lanes into effect.
Please follow these three new vehicle restrictions:
- No left turns from northbound West Portal Avenue onto Ulloa Street
- No westbound through traffic on Ulloa Street at West Portal Avenue
- No left turns from southbound West Portal Avenue onto Vicente Street
We have completed adding red color to the transit lane on Ulloa Street. We expect some additional late-night work to install red color on the transit lane on the north half of West Portal Avenue northbound later this month.
October 18 Public Hearing for adjustments to color curbs on Lenox Way and Ulloa Street
At the Friday, October 18 SFMTA Engineering Hearing, staff will be seeking feedback on proposed changed changes to color curb designations on Lenox Way and Ulloa Street. The below maps show existing and proposed future color curb designations.
The following changes are proposed:
- Making Lenox Way passenger loading zones seven-days-a-week instead of Monday through Saturday. Because there is demand for drop-off and pick-up space by the station on Sundays, we propose making this passenger loading zone space on Sundays as well. That means that general parking would no longer be allowed on Sundays between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
- Adding Muni-only night-time parking on the east side of Lenox Way. Outside of the passenger loading zone hours here, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., this space would be changed from general parking to parking for Muni vehicles only at night from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. This would improve access for SFMTA maintenance and operational crews who need to complete work at the station or in the tunnel at night.
- Adjusting color curb designations on Lenox Way next to the West Portal Library so that there are two passenger loading zones and one green zone.* We previously planned to add an additional passenger loading zone at the library by shifting the existing two green zones west. We heard community feedback requesting to limit green zones to the West Portal library frontage. In response, we are proposing to decrease the current green zone space from two to one vehicle to make room for two passenger loading spaces. While existing signage designates the passenger loading zone hours to be in effect “during library hours,” we are also proposing for the hours to be in effect daily from 7am-7pm to improve clarity and be consistent with the passenger loading zone on the west (station) side of the street.
- Relocating the 91 Owl terminal from the West Portal Station entrance (horseshoe) to the south side of Ulloa Street between West Portal Avenue and Claremont Boulevard.*While this relocation was already reviewed and approved at the project’s July 16 SFMTA Board meeting, we are proposing small changes to the planned hours of the night-time part-time bus zone.
- Proposed hours would be between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. (instead of the previously approved 11 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.) and would be designated with red and black curb. No parking will be allowed during these times.
- These spaces would still be available for passenger and commercial loading outside of these hours.
- The two spaces closest to Claremont Boulevard will have their commercial loading zone hours begin one hour early, so the zone runs from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Monday through Friday (instead of previous start time of 8 a.m.). These two spaces would be available for general parking between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. on weekends.
Community members can learn more and share their feedback at the Public Hearing on Friday, October 18 beginning at 10am online on Microsoft Teams. The above changes appear as Item 7 on the agenda.
After the October 18 Engineering Public Hearing, all feedback will be considered and the project team will determine whether they should be advanced to the SFMTA Board for final approval. The SFMTA Board would consider these changes later this year (anticipated in December). Note that the changes indicated in asterisks will be implemented on a temporary basis later this month and would be become permanent if approved by the SFMTA Board later this year. Those not indicated in asterisks, if approved, would be implemented next year. We will continue to provide updates on these changes, including when they would be considered by the SFMTA Board.

91 Owl and 57 Parkmerced bus stop changes coming Saturday, October 19
Two bus stop changes will take effect on October 19.
We are removing the 57 Parkmerced stop at Vicente St & West Portal Ave. This change was suggested through community feedback to improve safety and traffic operations at this intersection. Riders who use this stop can use alternate stops at West Portal Ave & 14th Ave or Ulloa St & West Portal Ave. Both alternative stops are one block away. This bus zone space will be repurposed with two new parking spaces (one general metered space and one accessible blue zone).
The 91 Owl terminal at West Portal Station will be relocated across Ulloa Street to the south side of the street between West Portal Avenue and Claremont Boulevard. This new stop location is where the 48 Quintara-24th Street stops during the daytime. This change will take place in advance of the upcoming redesign of the half circle outside the West Portal Station, known as the “horseshoe”. The redesign will include elements including planters, a bikeshare station and a street mural. This change will also result in a minor reroute of the 91 Owl to route along Ulloa Street eastbound, Claremont Boulevard southbound and Vicente Street westbound as shown in the below map.
