At the Tuesday, June 4, the SFMTA Board of Directors Meeting, the board will discuss the West Portal Station Safety and Community Space Improvements Project. During agenda item 12, project staff will share an update on the project, and SFMTA Board members will discuss the project. All members of the public are welcome to share their feedback during the public comment period for this agenda item.  

This hearing for the project will be information-only. We are not yet bringing a proposal to the SFMTA Board for a decision. The June 4th meeting will be an opportunity for the SFMTA Board to hear feedback on the project, consider tradeoffs and provide direction to staff.  We then plan to return to the SFMTA Board for approval based on their direction at the July 16 meeting, as the SFMTA Board are the final decision makers on the design that will be moving forward.

The meeting on June 4th begins at 1 p.m., and this project is item 12 on the agenda. Community members will be able to watch the meeting online via SFGovTV. Public comment will be heard in-person at City Hall Room 400 (1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place, San Francisco, CA), and written comments can be sent to MTABoard@SFMTA.com in advance of the meeting.

Continued Outreach Informing Proposals

At the SFMTA Board meeting, we expect to discuss both the original proposal that we shared in April as well as refinements or additional proposals that we have developed in response to the feedback we have heard from the community.

Since wrapping up our initial phase of outreach on the project in April, the project team has continued to engage community members on the project. In addition to reviewing the over 4,000 survey responses, including over 2,500 pieces of written feedback, and over 800 emails to our project email, we followed up with people who had questions about the project and created a Frequently Asked Questions page to our project webpage.  

We’ve also continued to gather feedback by presenting at events like the West Portal Rec Center’s senior lunch and West Portal Elementary School Parents Club meeting.

Additionally, District 7 Supervisor Myrna Melgar and the West Portal Merchants’ Association have convened the Welcoming West Portal Committee and held two meetings to discuss the project proposals and possible changes. The third meeting for the committee will take place on Monday, June 3 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., and members of the public can watch the meeting via Zoom. In addition to feedback we have been collecting from the community, discussion at the Welcoming West Portal Committee meetings is helping to guide additional or alternative proposals that will be discussed with the SFMTA Board at its June 4 meeting.
