S. Van Ness at Mission Intersection to be Closed August 4-9

The South Van Ness Avenue at Mission Street intersection will be closed to all traffic Wednesday, August 4, 6:00 a.m., through Monday, August 9, 6:00 a.m. As part of the Van Ness Improvement Project, we will be replacing the roadway on South Van Ness Avenue at Mission Street. Closing the intersection for five days allows us to complete inconvenient and disruptive work that would otherwise require two months of work done in segments.

This closure will impact people driving, taking transit and walking in SoMa, Tenderloin, Civic Center, Hayes Valley, Duboce Triangle, Downtown and Inner Mission.

Driving: There are a variety of reroutes available, but drivers are encouraged to avoid the area, if possible. Consider taking transit or walking. If you must drive, scout your route ahead of time.

• Detour for northbound Mission Street: From Mission Street northbound, turn right on Duboce Avenue, left on Folsom Street, left on 9th Street, right on Mission Street.
• Detour for southbound Otis Street to northbound Mission Street: From Otis Street southbound, turn left on Duboce Avenue, left on Folsom Street, left on 9th Street, right on Mission Street.
• Detour for southbound Otis Street to northbound Van Ness Avenue: From Otis Street southbound, turn left on Duboce Avenue, left on Folsom Street, left on 9th Street, left on Hayes, right on Van Ness Avenue.
• Detour for Highway 101 off-ramp: From Highway 101 off-ramp, take Duboce Avenue, turn right on Valencia Street, right on Market Street, left on Franklin Street. If continuing to Mission, right on Fell Street, right on 10th Street, left on Mission Street.
• Detour for southbound Van Ness Avenue: From Van Ness Avenue southbound, turn right on Grove Street, Hayes Street or Fell Street, and then turn left on Gough Street, slight right on Otis Street, left on Duboce Avenue, right on South Van Ness Avenue.
• Detour for eastbound Market Street and eastbound Fell Street: From Market Street, turn right on 10th Street, right on Howard Street, left on 11th Street, right on Folsom Street, right on Duboce Avenue, left on South Van Ness Avenue; 
  • OR: From Mission Street and 11th Street, turn right on Mission Street, right on 10th Street, right on Howard Street, left on 11th Street, right on Folsom Street, right on Duboce Avenue, left on South Van Ness Avenue.
• Detour for westbound Mission Street at 9th Street: From Mission Street westbound, turn right on 9th Street, turn left on Hayes Street or left on Grove Street, turn left on Gough Street, turn right on Otis Street, merge right onto Mission Street.
• Detour for westbound Mission Street (west of 9th Street): From Mission Street westbound, turn left on 10th Street, right on Howard Street, left on 11th Street, right on Folsom Street, right on Duboce Avenue, left on South Van Ness Avenue, right on 15th Street, left on Mission Street;
  • OR: From Mission Street westbound, turn left on 11th Street, right on Folsom Street, right on Duboce Avenue, left on South Van Ness Avenue, right on 15th Street, left on Mission Street.
• Detour for northbound S Van Ness Avenue at 13th St and westbound 12th Street: From South Van Ness Avenue, continue on Howard Street, turn right at 11th Street or 12th Street, left on Folsom Street, left on 9th Street, left on Hayes Street, right on Van Ness Avenue.
  • OR: From 12th Street westbound, turn right on Howard Street, right on 11th Street, left on Folsom Street, left on 9th Street, left on Hayes Street, right on Van Ness Avenue.
• Detour for southbound Howard Street: From Howard Street southbound, turn left on 12th Street, left on Folsom Street, left on 9th Street, left on Hayes Street, right on Van Ness Avenue.
• Detour for northbound S Van Ness Avenue (south of 15th St): From northbound South Van Ness Ave, turn left on 15th Street, right on Valencia Street, right on Market Street, left on Franklin Street, right on Fell St, left on Van Ness Avenue.

Walking: Pedestrian access, including accessible ramps, will be maintained but people walking are encouraged to avoid the work area. 

Cycling: There are a variety of reroutes available, but cyclists are encouraged to avoid the area, if possible. Detour information for driving above is applicable for bicycling. If you must travel in the area, scout your route ahead of time.

Muni: The 14 Mission, 14R Mission Rapid, 49 Van Ness-Mission and 90 San Bruno Owl will be rerouted and bus stops will be relocated. 

AC Transit: AC Transit Route 800 will be rerouted and skip the Market & South Van Ness stop. Please catch the bus at Market & Gough Street or Market & 7th Street.

We appreciate your patience. With this effort, construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2021. San Francisco’s first Bus Rapid Transit corridor is expected to go into service on Van Ness Avenue in early 2022.
