Men and women stand in a line holding orange posters to announce Transit Week.

Get #OnBoardSF this week as we join with the San Francisco Transit Riders to celebrate all things Muni — our customers, our city and the men and women who keep them moving.

Festivities kicked off yesterday with a press conference at City Hall and goodies for Muni riders on the 38 Geary this morning.

Events & Activities

The SFMTA and the SF Transit Riders want to build a culture in this city that supports public transit and brings "more smiles #OnBoardSF."

Volunteers will be greeting commuters with stickers and pre-printed thank you notes to give to their drivers all week long. Planning to ride? Pledge and stay up to date with the Transit Riders.

Here’s where you can find the celebrations happening throughout the week:

  • Tuesday – 38 Geary
  • Wednesday – 22 Fillmore
  • Thursday – K Ingleside
  • Friday – 24 Divisadero
  • Saturday – 14 Mission

The SF Transit Riders have also issued a social media challenge to tag photos of the “Transit Week” ad signage on the exterior of buses with the hashtag #OnBoardSF.” Winners will receive pint glasses that will be handed out on Friday in advance of the public transit crawl.

Why Transit?

By taking transit, you help improve the climate, the streets and the city through:

  • Lower carbon emissions and cleaner air
  • Less traffic congestion and safer streets
  • Vibrant neighborhoods and a livable city

Muni riders make more than 700k daily trips. We are proud to help you get where you need to go. Thank you for riding Muni!

We are also proud of our Muni operators. The vast majority of our operators and other frontline staff are exceptional. When you see them this week, grab one of the SFTR thank you notes and let them know you appreciate them.

While we have work to do, there are few systems like Muni. We can get you to any part of the city and beyond through key connections. And we are working every day to improve transit for everyone. For instance:

1. 300 new buses are already on the street, with hundreds more to come.

2. New, state of the art trains will begin service next year which will expand rail service immediately.

3. Over the last couple of years, we’ve implemented four service increases.

4. We now have more service on the street than ever – in fact, we have more than 300,000 more service hours a year.

Thity-six miles of transit-priority improvements have been approved as part of Muni Forward. This includes:

  • 12 miles of red lanes
  • 70 transit bulbs
  • 19 traffic signals
  • 100 pedestrian bulbs
  • More than 480 signals across the city equipped with Transit Signal Priority
  • 4 new Muni routes: 55 16th Street, E Embarcadero, 44 Owl and 48 Owl

All this is to say: we have a lot to appreciate this Transit Week, and we at the SFMTA are going to work extremely hard to continue to improve the service we provide.

And we like to have fun. We’ve doubled the number of buses that will have Muni Art on them and are gearing up for the fifth Muni Heritage Weekend. Join us September 24 and 25 for Muni Heritage and revel in SF transit history while looking to its future. Good things are ahead.

The work we do is all about you, the riders, and we appreciate you every day.
