Beginning the morning of Monday August 5 around 7 a.m., the SFMTA will convert Lenox Way to one-way travel southbound (from Taraval Street towards Ulloa Street). The new Lenox Way configuration will include one southbound travel lane with on-street parking on both sides of the street.
What to Expect:
On Monday August 5, SFMTA crews will begin work. As soon as 7 a.m., it will no longer be possible to drive northbound on Lenox Way towards Taraval Street. The street will never be closed, and access will always be maintained into and out of all driveways. We will try to coordinate that work with street cleaning hours to minimize temporary parking impacts.
Work will include:
- Installing painted edgelines on both sides of the street to visually narrow the road and help calm traffic.
- Adjusting the painted safety zone at the southwest corner of Lenox Way at Ulloa Street to allow for vehicle egress, if needed, in case of a prolonged Muni rail stoppage on Ulloa next to the library.
- Expanding passenger loading zones and installing Muni maintenance parking on the south side of Lenox next to the station. These changes would remove four general metered spaces.
- Installation of a yellow school bus zone on the south side of Taraval Street between Lenox Way and Claremont Boulevard. This school bus zone will be used instead of the existing one on Claremont Boulevard during the West Portal Elementary School construction project. This change would remove about four Residential Parking Permit spaces on Taraval.
- Daylighting the southwest and southeast corners of Taraval Street at Lenox Way by installing red curb to improve visibility of pedestrians in the Lenox Way crosswalk which would remove two Residential Parking Permit spaces on Taraval Street.
- We expect this work to last a few days and be installed during daytime hours.
To complete this work, there will be some temporary impacts.
Parking impacts:
- On Monday, August 5, some parking spaces may be temporarily prohibited.
- When work is complete, parking will remain on both sides of Lenox Way (except where passenger loading zones or Muni Maintenance parking spaces are installed)
Traffic Impacts:
- Beginning Monday, August 5 morning, Lenox Way will convert to one-way traffic.
- One southbound lane will remain open during implementation. Drive with caution and watch for SFMTA crews.
- We have requested assistance from our traffic control team to help direct traffic on Monday, August 5 during peak times to help people adjust to the new one-way travel. Additionally, on August 5, project staff will be on Lenox Way during commute times to monitor conditions and share information.
Noise impacts:
- We expect that there will not be significant noise impacts other than brief signage installation and some grinding work to remove existing street paint on Monday, August 5.
Muni service impacts:
- We expect that Muni service will not be impacted.
We are implementing this work in advance of the first day of school on Monday, August 19. This responds to input from West Portal Elementary School to establish this new travel pattern prior to the start of the school year.
Why are we making these changes? Converting Lenox Way to one-way southbound traffic will improve traffic safety by decreasing through-traffic on Ulloa Street in the West Portal Station area. It will also support compliance with the two travel restrictions proposed at West Portal Avenue and Ulloa Street.
