Today, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is excited to announce that we are recipients of a grant through the All Stations Accessibility Program. This program, administered by the Federal Transit Administration, makes competitive funding available to assist in the financing of capital projects to repair, improve, modify, retrofit, or relocate infrastructure of stations or facilities to make all public areas of the station accessible to people with disabilities -- including those who use wheelchairs.
The SFMTA will be awarded over $4.6 million to construct platforms, wheelchair ramps, and make other improvements that focus on accessibility at five Muni light rail stops on the J- Church line and three Muni stops on the M-Ocean View line.
“All of San Francisco’s methods of transportation must be accessible to everyone who use transit to get around our city,” said Mayor Breed. “That work is underway, and the funding from this grant will help us improve access along two crucial Muni light rail lines. I’d like to thank Secretary Buttigieg for his commitment to improving accessibility to our country’s transit systems.”
These system enhancements will increase the number of surface-rail stations with level boarding -- improving accessibility for the thousands of residents and visitors with disabilities who rely on Muni to get around the city safely and efficiently.
The stop locations that will benefit from these accessibility improvements are:
- M Ocean View terminus final outbound stop at the San Jose Ave./Niagara Ave.
- M Ocean View inbound stop at 19th Ave./Monticello St. (new stop location from stop consolidation)
- M Ocean View outbound stop at 19th Ave./Randolph St. -north (new stop location from stop consolidation)
- J Church outbound stop at San Jose Ave./Santa Rosa Ave.
- J Church inbound stop at San Jose Ave./Santa Ynez Ave.
- J Church outbound stop at San Jose Ave./Santa Ynez Ave.
- J Church inbound stop at Church St./Duboce Ave.
- J Church outbound stop at Church St./Market St.
“We are so grateful for this funding to make a more accessible Muni Metro,” said Jeffrey Tumlin, SFMTA Director of Transportation. “This grant will help all of our riders enjoy a Muni system that’s fast, safe, frequent and reliable. We thank the Federal Transit Administration Acting Administrator Veronica Vanterpool for supporting the growth of accessible transit here in San Francisco.”
The Federal Transit Administration grant will expand accessibility across the Muni system to those who need it most. The grant was secured with strong support of Mayor London Breed, the Mayor’s Office on Disability, the San Francisco County Transportation Authority, the San Francisco Department of Disability and Aging Services, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), San Francisco In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) and the SFMTA Multimodal Accessibility Advisory Committee.
