On November 3, 2015, the SFMTA Board of Directors will review the proposals for the Powell St Safety pilot and make an official decision to legislate the proposal. The pilot aims to improve safety for people walking along Powell St, and free cable cars from traffic congestion in the area.
If approved, the pilot would prohibit all vehicles except Muni, taxis, and commercial vehicles from driving on Powell Street between Ellis and Geary Streets. Turn restrictions would be in effect for 18 months while the pilot's effectiveness is evaluated. If successful, a permanent street design incorporating elements designed to promote walking and limit motorized traffic on Powell would be pursued.
