The Transportation Authority in collaboration with the SFMTA is conducting the District 2 Safety Study to address traffic safety and access challenges to places that attract seniors, children, and people with disabilities. These places include hospitals, schools, and parks. The study will implement quick-build improvements at locations determined through outreach and staff review.
Project Goals
- Reduce barriers to access places in District 2 that especially attract kids, seniors, and people with disabilities
- Improve traffic safety
- Identify potential longer-term recommendations
What is quick-build?
Quick-build improvements are reversible, adjustable traffic safety improvements that can be installed relatively quickly. Unlike major capital projects that may take years to plan, design, bid and construct, quick-build projects are constructed within weeks or months. Improvements may include:
- Paint, traffic delineators, and street signs ( e.g. high visibility crosswalks, painted safety zones)
- Parking and loading adjustments
- Traffic calming (e.g. asphalt speed humps, cushions)
Outreach Process
The Transportation Authority conducted round one of outreach in the summer of 2024. The goal was to get feedback on road safety and access issues. Project staff reached out to stakeholder groups to introduce the projects and get feedback on traffic safety needs. Outreach efforts included an online survey, several pop-up events, and a virtual town hall. Staff also offered presentations to community-based organizations. Project material from round one of outreach can be accessed on the Transportation Authority project webpage.
As part of the outreach process, staff are also working closely with other SFMTA projects in District 2 to make sure staff are coordinating outreach & design efforts that are already in motion across the district (e.g. residential traffic calming, school safety, quick-build projects).
Project staff expect to start round two of outreach in spring 2025. During this time, staff will share design proposals with the public for feedback.
District 2 Study Areas
The map below shows the five areas where the project team are focusing outreach efforts. The study areas were chosen based on places that have a high concentration of locations that draw children, seniors, and people with disabilities. This areas are also geographically distributed throughout District 2.
- Anza Vista
- Cathedral Hill
- Pacific Heights
- Presidio Heights
- Marina

Cost and Funding
