The District 2 Safety Study will look at access and traffic safety in the neighborhood. The study will focus on areas that have many seniors, children, and people with disabilities (i.e., "vulnerable road users"). These areas include hospitals, schools, parks, and recreational areas. The study will recommend a list of quick-build safety improvements. It will also provide guidance for implementation. This study is in collaboration with the SFMTA and the Transportation Authority.
Project Goals
- Reduce barriers to access places in District 2 that attract kids, seniors, and vulnerable road users. These places include hospitals, parks, and schools.
- Improve traffic safety
What is quick-build?
Quick-build improvements are reversible, adjustable traffic safety improvements that can be installed relatively quickly. Unlike major capital projects that may take years to plan, design, bid and construct, quick-build projects are constructed within weeks or months. Improvements may include:
- Paint, traffic delineators, and street signs ( e.g. high visibility crosswalks, painted safety zones)
- Parking and loading adjustments
- Traffic calming (e.g. asphalt speed humps, cushions)
Outreach Process
The Transportation Authority conducted round one of outreach in the summer of 2024. Staff targeted outreach in five main project areas. The goal was to get feedback on road safety and access issues. Project staff reached out to stakeholder groups to introduce the projects and get feedback on traffic safety needs. Outreach efforts included an online survey, several pop-up events, and a virtual town hall. Staff also offered presentations to community-based organizations. Project material and summaries for round one of outreach can be accessed on the Transportation Authority project webpage. Project staff expect to start round two of outreach in winter 2025. During this time, staff will share design proposals with the public for feedback.
As part of the outreach process, staff are also working closely with other SFMTA projects in District 2 to make sure staff are coordinating outreach & design efforts as needed.
District 2 Study Areas
The map below shows the five areas where we focused our outreach efforts. We chose study areas based on places that have a high concentration of locations that draw children, seniors, and people with disabilities. We also selected study areas that were geographically distributed throughout District 2.
- Anza Vista
- Cathedral Hill
- Pacific Heights
- Presidio Heights
- Marina
Cost and Funding
The project is funded by the Transportation Authority’s Neighborhood Program funds at the request of District 2 Supervisor and Transportation Authority Board member Catherine Stefani.
