Building on the success of the northern Valencia project, in early 2020 the Valencia Bikeway project team explored and presented design concepts for southern Valencia Street between 19th Street and Cesar Chavez to the public. However, with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the SFMTA had to shift its focus to pandemic response. Additionally, with the introduction of pandemic response programs like Shared Spaces, the physical conditions of Valencia Street changed. Not knowing how Shared Spaces would affect the long-term conditions of the street, the project team focused on immediate safety improvements along the corridor.
With the future of Shared Spaces becoming clearer, the project team is resuming planning and design work on the mid-section of Valencia Street between 15th and 24th streets through an 18-month pilot design proposal.
This 18-month pilot is an effort to support the city’s Vision Zero commitment and curb management strategy and it will incorporate the following design elements:
- Upgrade the existing bike lane to a protected bikeway
- Install pedestrian safety improvements, including intersection daylighting
- Implement left-turn restrictions on Valencia Street between 15th and 24th streets
- Reconfigure the curb layout
The project team will also develop a complementary curb management plan to reallocate curb space to support the permanent Shared Spaces program while also providing loading, customer, and resident access along Valencia Street between 15th and 24th streets. If you are a business office, employee, or resident in the project area, please take the loading/Shared Spaces survey to help us develop the curb management plan:

Project schedule
- Summer 2022: Initial community outreach and design
- Fall 2022: Design outreach, including a project open house (virtual)
- Late 2022: Public Hearing, project approvals, and implementation
- Mid-2024: Project evaluation, pilot assessment, and proposal of next steps
The project team is currently undergoing an initial community outreach and design process. In fall 2022, the project team will share and gather public comments on the pilot design and curb management plan during the project open house.
After the project open house, the project team will review and revise the design proposal, as needed. In late 2022, the project team will bring the 18-month pilot proposal for mid-Valencia to a Public Hearing for official public comment and to the SFMTA Board of Directors for their consideration.
Upon the conclusion of the pilot, the project team will assess, evaluate, and propose the next steps for this section of Valencia Street.
