L Taraval Train on Taraval Street

L Taraval Train Service Returns, and Upcoming Community Events

We're happy to share that the L Taraval Improvement Project has been substantially completed, on time and on budget! L Taraval train service returns Saturday, September 28. Thanks to our community partners, residents and merchants for your support and patience throughout the project design and construction. Your input has helped to build a better Taraval for everyone who enjoys the corridor.

Check out our self-guided virtual tour to see some project highlights. Or go for a train ride down Taraval to experience the real thing!

While the biggest work is behind us, please note there are still a few smaller “punch list” items remaining, such as adjusting utility lines, refreshing transit lane paint, boarding island grout work, removing construction materials and installing transit shelters.

Community Appreciation Event and Movies at McCoppin

Friday October 4, 2024, 5 - 7 p.m., McCoppin Square, Taraval Street at 23rd Avenue

The SFMTA is partnering with People of Parkside (POPS) and Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD) to celebrate with the community! This community appreciation event will be filled with activities and prizes for the whole family.

  • Pick up an L Taraval tote bag from the SFMTA table. If you find a golden coin inside, spin the wheel to win another prize! Prizes include gift cards from local businesses, pre-loaded Clipper cards, and commemorative vintage Muni tokens!
  • Play Take Time for Taraval BINGO! with OEWD by shopping with local merchants, collecting stickers and filling up your board to win a prize.
  • Stick around for the first of October’s “Movies in McCoppin” series, kicking off with Wonka at sundown.

Check out the dates and times for the other Movies in McCoppin films, including Turning Red, The Little Mermaid, and Barbie at the Movies in McCoppin website.

L Taraval Train Service Returns

Starting, Saturday, September 28 L Taraval trains will resume service between Embarcadero Station and SF Zoo. Riders will once again be able to enjoy a one-seat ride from downtown to the beach. Trains will run on 10-minute frequencies on weekdays and 12-minutes on weekends. Board trains at the platform or street instead of using the buses at the curb. L Bus service will be discontinued.

Want to be part of history? Catch the first train from downtown to the beach and back after five years. Below is the train schedule for the first L Taraval trains going into service:

  • First Inbound trips from Wawona/46th
    • 6:00am – First trip leaving the Zoo to go eastbound, but it will change to an M Ocean View outbound when it reaches West Portal and head back to Balboa Park (the initial trips on Saturday morning do this because the subway doesn’t open until ~8am on the weekends).
    • 7:50am – First trip that will enter the subway to Embarcadero
  • First Outbound trips
    • 5:24am – First trip leaves West Portal (from Ulloa & Lenox since the subway is closed) for SF Zoo
    • 8:06am – First trip leaves Embarcadero for SF Zoo
