L Taraval Improvement Project

Segment B Update – July 29 - August 10, 2024

The L Taraval Improvement Project is on track to be completed this fall. The most disruptive work to replace sewer, water, rail lines, streetbase and repaving the entire corridor has been completed. The traffic lights are complete and will start three color operation on Monday, July 29 at 17th, 18th, 22nd, 24th and 28th avenues. We are completing installation of the final remaining boarding island with decorative pavers and adding landscaping, artwork and safety features such as high-visibility crosswalks. We are in the operational phase of train testing; once complete operator training is planned to begin in mid-August.

The Overhead Contact System (OCS) lines have been energized for train testing. Workers are in the area testing ground conduits and infrastructure to accommodate trains for operational testing. If you are driving or working in the area, please stay alert around trains and crews during testing.

To ensure the safety of the public, a permit is required for any contractors that are planning to work within 10 feet of the overhead wires. Please reach out to the project team with any questions: LTaravalProject@SFMTA.com or 415.646.2379.

General construction hours are Monday to Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Construction schedules are subject to change. “No Parking” signs will be posted in construction and staging areas.

Construction work is scheduled to be performed – July 29 - August 10, 2024

Train Testing (anticipated)

Testing is planned to be performed between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • 8/1/24 to 8/14/24: Operational train testing

To accommodate traffic flow of buses and vehicles around test trains in the curved track areas, there will be intermittent parking restrictions on both sides of the street on:

  • 15th Ave between Taraval and Ulloa streets
  • Ulloa between Forest Side and Lenox streets

Taraval Street

  • 16th, 17th, 23rd, 25th, 27th, 29th, 31st, 33rd, 36th: landscape planters at the end of boarding islands; prepare and paint guard rails
  • 19th to 36th avenues: saw cut and demolish sidewalk in preparation for tree planting; removal of trees and stump grinding, and tree planting

Ulloa

  • Forest side to 15th Avenue: tree planting

Night work from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sundays through Fridays

  • Ulloa Street between 15th and Forest Side avenues and Taraval between 15th to 36th avenues: Perform Overhead Contact System (OCS) adjustments at curved track areas. Work is expected to be completed August 1, 2024.

Temporary staging locations

  • No active temporary staging locations

Present – Fall 2024

L Taraval / L Special / L Owl - Inbound

  • Taraval Street and 15th Avenue has been relocated to the southeast side of the intersection until fall 2024.

L Owl: changes for riders heading from downtown to the SF Zoo

Muni service changes being implemented on Saturday, August 17.

  • The L Owl will start running at 12 a.m. instead of 10 p.m. To maintain coverage between 10 p.m. and 12 a.m., the L Bus will be extended to 12 a.m. to provide coverage on Taraval Street, and the F Bus will provide service until 12 a.m. on Market and Embarcadero.
  • Now, if you ride the bus between the SF Zoo and Market Street during these two hours, you can take the L Bus to West Portal Station and transfer to the K Ingleside or M Ocean View for a ride to all Market Street destinations. Those continuing on toward the Embarcadero and Fisherman’s Wharf can transfer to the F Bus at all regular F line stops. This change helps us prepare for the completion of the L Taraval Improvement Project this fall.

Multiple city agencies are performing infrastructure work in the area, including Public Works on 19th Avenue, Public Utilities Commission at Vicente and Wawona streets and PG&E along Taraval Street.
