The L Taraval Improvement Project is on track to be completed this fall. The most disruptive work to replace sewer, water, rail lines, streetbase and repaving the entire corridor has been completed. The traffic lights are complete and currently in full color operation at 17th, 18th, 22nd, 24th and 28th avenues. We are completing installation of the final remaining boarding island with decorative pavers and adding landscaping, artwork and safety features such as high-visibility crosswalks. We have started operator training and anticipate that it will continue through the end of September. There will be no operator training during the Twin Peaks Tunnel closure from August 22 – 29.

PG&E will be removing poles that were not replaced between August 22 and 29, including weekends.

The Overhead Contact System (OCS) lines have been energized. If you are driving or working in the area, please stay alert around trains and crews during testing. To ensure the safety of the public, a permit is required for any contractors that are planning to work within 10 feet of the overhead wires. Please reach out to the project team with any questions: LTaravalProject@SFMTA.com or 415.646.2379.

General construction hours are Monday to Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Construction schedules are subject to change. “No Parking” signs will be posted in construction and staging areas.

L Owl: changes for riders heading from downtown to the SF Zoo

  • Muni service changes were implemented on Saturday, August 17. The L Owl will start running at 12 a.m. instead of 10 p.m. To maintain coverage between 10 p.m. and 12 a.m., the L Bus has been extended until 12 a.m. to provide coverage on Taraval Street, and the F Bus will provide service until 12 a.m. on Market and Embarcadero.
    • If you ride the bus between the SF Zoo and Market Street during these two hours, you can take the L Bus to West Portal Station and transfer to the K Ingleside or M Ocean View for a ride to all Market Street destinations.
    • Those continuing on toward the Embarcadero and Fisherman’s Wharf can transfer to the F Bus at all regular F line stops. This change helps us prepare for the completion of the L Taraval Improvement Project this fall.

Multiple city agencies are performing infrastructure work in the area, including Public Works on 19th Avenue, Public Utilities Commission at Vicente and Wawona streets and PG&E along Taraval Street.
