The Fulton Street Safety and Transit Project will soon bring transit improvements, safety upgrades for people walking and new water drainage infrastructure to Fulton Street along the northwestern edge of Golden Gate Park.
Construction along the corridor is expected to last about a year. Work is scheduled to begin the week of October 21 and the project is expected to wrap up in fall 2025.
Check out the project webpage for a broad overview of the entire project, which aims to improve safety for people walking, increase the reliability of public transit on the corridor and address necessary improvements to drainage infrastructure in the area.
What to expect in the coming weeks
The contractor plans to begin work the week of October 21 at 8th Avenue and Fulton Street. Work will begin at the intersection of Arguello Boulevard and Fulton Street as soon as possible — likely in early November.
Work at Arguello Boulevard and Fulton Street will include:
- Curb ramps at northwest corner
- Pavement renovation
- Minor work on drainage infrastructure
- Traffic signal work
Work at 8th Avenue and Fulton Street will include:
- Curb ramps at northwest and southwest corners
- Pavement renovation
- Traffic signal work
Possible Water Disruptions: Arguello Boulevard & Fulton Street
At the intersection of Arguello Boulevard and Fulton Street, construction crews will be performing work that may result in the disruption of water service to some buildings in the area. The San Francisco Water Department will notify affected residents and homeowners. The work being done at 8th Avenue and Fulton Street is not expected to cause any water service disruptions.
What to know about the overall project
The Fulton Street Safety and Transit Project aims to improve safety for people walking and increase the efficiency and reliability of buses that use Fulton Street, including the 5 Fulton and 5R Fulton Rapid.
Scope of Full Project: Four Intersections on Fulton Street
Construction will be focused on four intersections along Fulton Street, including 10th, 8th and 6th avenues, and Arguello Boulevard. During construction, crews will be upgrading traffic signals, improving curbs and curb ramps, installing sidewalk extensions, or “bulb-outs,” upgrading storm drains and resurfacing pavement at all of the intersections listed above. The bulb-outs will help Muni riders board and exit buses more efficiently and boost safety for people waiting for the bus and crossing the street.
Digging Once: A Joint Effort of SFMTA and SFPW
The project is a joint effort of the San Francisco Municipal Transit Agency and San Francisco Public Works. Both agencies are working together to adhere to the City’s “dig once” policy.
