Bus Stop Changes on Geary and O'Farrell

Share this:

Bus Stop on Geary at Laguna.

The SFMTA Board approved changes to bus stops on Geary on August 21, 2018, and many of those improvements are coming this fall. These bus stop changes aim to improve the speed, reliability and convenience of your trip on the 38 Geary and 38R Geary Rapid. Changes include refinements made in response to extensive outreach and community member input. As a part of considering any bus stop change, SFMTA completes a form that considers factors such as distance between stops, average ridership, accessibility of next-closest stops and transfers for each bus stop. This form is shared with stakeholders representing seniors and people with disabilities for input before proceeding.

In general changes include:

  • Moving bus stops from the near side of intersections to the far side, so buses don’t get stopped at red lights as often
  • Removing or consolidating closely-spaced stops to improve travel time reliability while maintaining access

Refinements based on recent input:

  • Retention of the 38 Geary bus stops at Stanyan and Commonwealth streets
  • Retention of the current location of the eastbound 38 Geary bus stop on Starr King Way at Gough Street

These changes are part of the Geary Rapid Project that aims to improve transit reliability, reduce travel times for Muni customers and increase safety for people traveling along the corridor.
