Muni Service on Fourth of July Holiday
On Thursday, July 4 (Fourth of July Holiday), Muni will operate on a Saturday Schedule.
Parking Enforcement on Fourth of July Holiday
On Thursday, July 4 (Fourth of July Holiday), parking meters (all meters including color capped), white zones, nightly street sweeping (street cleaning) and safety violations (no stopping, no parking, red and blue zones) will be enforced.
Other SFMTA parking programs will not be enforced:
- Residential Parking Permits (RPP) Zones
- General Parking Time Limits
- Weekday Daytime Street Sweeping (Street Cleaning)
- Commuter Shuttle Towaway Zones
- Unmetered Yellow and Green Zones
Vehicles creating a hazard and/or an unsafe condition (i.e. double parking, blocking a bike lane, blocking driveways, blocking crosswalks, fire hydrants, etc.) are subject to receiving citations and can possibly be towed.
Note: Parking meters in the city are enforced Monday through Saturday with exception of the following areas where parking meters are enforced seven days per week throughout the year except Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day:
- Parking meters in the Fisherman’s Wharf area
- On and near The Embarcadero roadway
- In the Special Event Area around AT&T Park
- Five metered off-street parking facilities listed below:
- 8th Avenue at Clement Street
- 9th Avenue at Clement Street
- Geary Boulevard at 21st Avenue
- 18th Avenue at Geary Boulevard
- Pierce Street Garage (between Lombard and Chestnut streets)
Annual July 4 Independence Day Fireworks Celebration
Thursday, July 4: The July 4 Annual Independence Day Fireworks Celebration will start at 2 p.m. along the waterfront near the Municipal Pier and Pier 39. The fireworks display will begin at 9:30 p.m. Muni will operate on a Saturday schedule with extra Muni service to get people to and from the Fireworks area between Aquatic Park and Fisherman’s Wharf.
As many as 200,000 people are expected in the event area. Traffic congestion and disruption of transit service are expected in the event area. Traffic congestion, temporary street closures and Muni reroutes are expected. To ensure safety, fireworks viewers should pay attention to their surroundings and allow extra travel time to get around the city.
Traffic Restrictions
Treasure Island will be closed to cars for the fireworks this year; only Treasure Island residents will be permitted onto the island by car. To watch the fireworks from Treasure Island, non-residents must arrive by Muni Route 25 Treasure Island, by the Treasure Island Ferry, or by bicycle from Oakland.
The streets between Aquatic Park and Fisherman’s Wharf and north of Bay Street may close as crowds gather for the July 4 Fireworks Celebration. The Embarcadero north of Broadway is also subject to closure for public safety.
Muni Service
Muni will run on a Saturday schedule with supplemental service to and from the fireworks.
Getting to the Fireworks:
- Market Street Fireworks Shuttle will run from 3 to 9 p.m. Board on Market Street at Inbound Boarding Islands from 5th to Steuart street; and at the Ferry Building. Drop off will be at Fisherman’s Wharf.
- Caltrain Fireworks Shuttle will run from 3 to 9p.m. Board at 4th & Townsend streets outside the Caltrain Station. Drop off will be at Aquatic Park.
- Van Ness/Civic Center Fireworks Shuttle will run from 3 to 9 p.m. Pick-ups will be at UN Plaza/Civic Center BART Station; and along Inbound Route 49 Van Ness/Mission stops on Van Ness. Drop off will be at Aquatic Park.
Leaving the Fireworks:
- Market Street Fireworks Express will run from 10 to 10:45 p.m. (or when crowds are clear). Board at Kearny and North Point streets. Drop off will be at the Ferry Building, Embarcadero Station, and Market/Battery streets.
- Caltrain Fireworks Express will run from 10 to 10:45 p.m. (or when crowds are clear). Board at Kearny and North Point streets. Drop off at 4th/King Caltrain Station.
- Van Ness/Civic Center Fireworks Express will run from 10 to 10:45 p.m. (or when crowds are clear). Board at Bay and Polk streets. Drop off at Outbound Route 49 Van Ness/Mission stops on Van Ness and at UN Plaza/Civic Center BART Station.
Rerouted Buses and Bus Substitutions:
- The following regular Muni lines and routes will be re-routed to stay outside of the July 4 Celebration area: 8 Bayshore Express; 19 Polk; 28 19th Avenue; 30 Stockton; 39 Coit; 49 Van Ness/Mission; F Market & Wharves; L Owl; Powell-Mason Cable Car (Bus Substitution); Powell-Hyde Cable Car (Bus Substitution).
- The F Market & Wharves Line will operate with buses all day.
- The Powell-Mason, Powell-Hyde, and California Cable Car lines will operate with buses starting at 2 p.m.
- The following Muni routes may experience crowding or delays after the fireworks end: 8 Bayshore; 28 19th Avenue; 22 Fillmore; 25 Treasure Island; 30 Stockton and 45 Union-Stockton.
- Two extra buses will provide service along Route 25 Treasure Island.
Purchasing Muni Fare
Muni customers are encouraged to purchase their round-trip fare in advance or use a Clipper® Card. Customers can also purchase tickets at the Ticket Vending Machines located at the Ferry Building F-Line platforms. Regular Muni fares apply:
- $3 for adults (age 19-64) or $5 for a Day Pass valid until midnight (only available at a farebox or at all Ticket Vending Machines located along the Embarcadero on the F-Line platforms)
- $1.50 for seniors (ages 65 and older)
- $1.50 for people with disabilities
- Youth, ages zero through 18 ride Muni for free
- All single ride fares paid for by cash or Clipper Card will receive the regular 2-hour transfer
Parking

Downtown First Thursdays
Thursday, July 4: The Downtown First Thursdays (DFT) event will take place on 2nd Street from 5 to 10 p.m. This event will repeat monthly through April 3, 2025. For event details, visit https://www.dftsf.com/.
The following street closures will be required from noon until midnight, Thursday:
- 2nd Street between Market and Folsom streets
- Clementina Street between 2nd and 1st streets
- Jessie Street between New Montgomery and 2nd streets
- Minna Street between New Montgomery and 1st streets
- Natoma Street between New Montgomery and 1st streets
- Stevenson Street between New Montgomery and 1st streets
- Tehama Street between Hawthorne and 1st streets
These intersections will remain open at all times: 1) 2nd and Mission streets; 2) 2nd and Howard streets.
There will be no impact on Muni service.
Fillmore Jazz Festival
Saturday, July 6 and Sunday, July 7: The Annual Fillmore Street Jazz Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day on Fillmore Street between Jackson and Eddy streets. For more event details, visit www.fillmorejazzfest.com.
The following street closures will be required from 12:01 a.m., Saturday to 11:59 p.m., Sunday:
- Fillmore Street between Eddy and Jackson streets
- Washington Street between Webster and Steiner streets
- Wilmot Street between Webster and Steiner streets
- Post Street between Webster and Steiner streets
- Intersections closed: On Fillmore Street at Washington, Wilmot and Post streets
The following Muni routes will be affected: 22 Fillmore and 24 Divisadero.
Events at Chase Center
Saturday, July 6 to Wednesday, July 10: There will be multiple events to take place at Chase Center: 1) The 6th Annual California Classic, a summer basketball showcase featuring 2024 NBA Draft picks, second-year pros and more players competing to land their spot on an NBA roster for the 2024-25 season; and 2) Concert Performance by an award-winning band.
Saturday, July 6: California Classic - Day 1 Doubleheader with two games. Doors will open at 1 p.m.
- Game 1 will begin at 1:30 p.m.: Sacramento Kings vs. Los Angeles Lakers
- Game 2 will begin at approximately 3:30 p.m.: Warriors vs. Miami Heat
Sunday, July 7: California Classic - Day 2 Doubleheader with two games. Doors will open at 1 p.m.
- Game 1 will begin at 1:30 p.m.: Sacramento Kings vs. Los Angeles Lakers
- Game 2 will begin at approximately 3:30 p.m.: Warriors vs. Miami Heat
Tuesday, July 9: Performance by Blink-182 will take place. The show will start at 7 p.m. Doors will open at 6 p.m.
Wednesday, July 10: California Classic - Day 3 Doubleheader
- Battle of NorCal: Warriors vs. Sacramento Kings. Game will start at 7 p.m. Doors will open at 6 p.m.
Supplemental Muni Service
- Muni will operate supplemental 78X Arena Express service.
- Pre-event express shuttle service from 16th Street BART Station to Chase Center will start two and a half hours before each game/event and will end one hour after game/event starts.
- Post-event express shuttle service from Chase Center on 16th Street to 16th Street BART Station will run until the area clears.
Special Event Parking Rates
During basketball games and other major events with more than 10,000 expected attendees at the arena, parking meters close to the arena will charge a special event rate of $10 per hour. These rates help reduce congestion and keep parking spots available in the neighborhoods near the arena, discouraging circling for free or cheap parking. Start times for special event rates vary based on the start time of the event. More information on special event parking regulations can be found on www.sfmta.com/special-event-parking.
Street Closures
To accommodate events that will take place at the arena, the following street closures will be enforced two hours before and one hour after each event:
- 16th Street between 3rd Street and Terry Francois Boulevard
- Warriors Way between 3rd Street and Terry Francois Boulevard
- Northbound 3rd Street between 16th Street and Warriors Way will also be closed approximately 30 minutes before and 45 minutes after an event.
- Only local access will be allowed on Northbound Illinois Street between Mariposa and 16th streets.
No Parking Zone
To facilitate loading and pick up for Muni customers and patrons, NO PARKING will be in effect at these locations during events:
- 16th Street between 3rd Street and Terry Francois Boulevard
- Warriors Way between 3rd Street and Terry Francois Boulevard
- Between the 500 and 700 blocks of Terry Francois Boulevard (TFB)
Taxi Stands
There is one taxi stand located on southbound Terry Francois Boulevard.
Ramp Taxis should use the loading zone on eastbound Warriors Way at Bridgeview Way.
Additional Passenger Loading
- 4th Street which connects to Chase Center via Gene Friend Way pedestrian path which cuts through UCSF campus.
- Owens Street connects to Chase Center via Gene Friend Way pedestrian path which cuts through UCSF campus.

San Francisco Giants Baseball Games
Tuesday, July 9 through Thursday, July 11: The San Francisco Giants will play three home games at the ballpark. Listed below are start times for these games:
- Three games against the Toronto Blue Jays: 1) 6:45 p.m., Tuesday, July 9; 2) 6:45 p.m., Wednesday, July 10; and 3) 12:45 p.m., Thursday, July 11.
Street Closures
To accommodate events that will take place at the ballpark, the following street closures will be enforced:
- Two and a half hours before the opening pitch, the SFMTA will close eastbound King Street between 3rd and 2nd streets to vehicle traffic. King Street will reopen after first pitch until the seventh inning.
- From the seventh inning until post-game traffic dies down, the SFMTA will again close eastbound King Street between 3rd and 2nd streets to vehicle traffic in order to reduce congestion on city streets.
- Additionally, the northbound portion of the 4th Street Bridge (Peter R. Maloney Bridge) will be closed to all traffic except Muni, taxis and bicycles during the post-game period.
Taxi Stands
- 2nd Street, west side, between Brannan and King Streets
- 2nd Street, east side, between Townsend and King Streets
- 3rd Street, west side, north of King Street

CONSTRUCTION WORK AND OTHER UPDATES
Bus Substitution for the J Church Line
Saturday, July 6: Due to an anticipated event, the J Church Line will be served by a bus substitution. The J Church Bus will run between Balboa Park and Duboce/Church stops. Customers can transfer to the K Ingleside, M Ocean View or S Shuttle trains at Church Station to continue travel downtown.
UPDATE: L Taraval Improvement Project—Segment B
The L Taraval Improvement Project is a multi-agency collaboration to improve safety, accessibility, and transit reliability, and to rehabilitate aging rails, utility lines and roadway pavement along the L Taraval line between Sunset Boulevard and 15th Avenue and on Ulloa Street near West Portal.
The L Taraval Improvement Project is on track to be completed this fall. The most disruptive work to replace sewer, water, rail lines, streetbase and repaving the entire corridor has been completed.
We are completing installation of boarding islands with rails and tiles, and adding landscaping, artwork and safety features such as high-visibility crosswalks.
The Overhead Contact System (OCS) lines have been energized for the initial testing of trains. Workers are in the area testing ground conduits and infrastructure to accommodate trains. If you are driving or working in the area, please stay alert around trains and crews during testing.

No construction is scheduled for the 4th of July holiday.

Taraval Street
- 15th Avenue: Preparation for planting, tree and stump removal
- 17th, 18th, 19th, 21st, 28th and 30th avenues: Installing art panels
- 17th, 18th, 19th, 21st, 28th and 30th avenues: Preparing and painting railings, installing thermos crosswalk and crosswalk striping
- 21st to 22nd; 22nd to 24th; 35th to 36th avenues: Boarding island pavers
Ulloa Street
- Forest side to 15th avenues: Preparation of planting new trees, removing unhealthy/ unstable trees
The following L Taraval bus stops are being relocated temporarily during construction:
- L Taraval Bus / L Special / L Owl (Present to Fall 2024)
- Inbound
- From Taraval Street and 15th Avenue to the southeast side of the intersection

Masks Recommended
Masks are no longer required, but are encouraged in any SFMTA facilities, transit hubs or on vehicles including Muni buses, streetcars, light rail vehicles or cable cars or in taxis or on paratransit.
ONGOING: Essential Trip Card Discount Program
The SFMTA’s program, Essential Trip Card (ETC) Program, assists people with disabilities and older adults to make essential trips using taxis. The program provides two to three round trips at an 80% discount per month, i.e. rider pays $6 to receive a value of $30 or pays $12 to receive a $60 value. If essential needs require it, riders may receive additional value up to $120 of taxi service per month.
To qualify for the program, customer must be either age 65 or older or an adult with disabilities. Eligible adults may apply for the ETC program by calling the Paratransit Mobility Management office at 415-351-7053.
