Rail Restoration Updates

Note: As of January 7, 2023, the K Ingleside and T Third are no longer combined. The K Ingleside continues to run between Balboa Park and Embarcadero stations. The T Third runs between Sunnydale and Chinatown-Rose Pak Station via Central Subway. 

Effective February 19, 2022

Muni Metro service is extended to midnight seven days a week including Sunday. Last trains will depart their terminals before midnight and will reach the end of the subway tunnel, in either direction, by midnight. The last eastbound Muni Metro train will depart daily at 11:50 p.m. and last westbound train at 12:00 a.m. Read more information in our blog: 

The J Church returns to its previous route between Balboa Park and Embarcadero through the Market Street subway.

 

Effective October 2, 2021

Muni Metro service is extended to midnight on weekdays and Saturdays, 10 p.m. on Sundays to better align with BART operating hours. Monday through Saturday, last trains will depart their terminals before midnight and will reach the end of the subway tunnel, in either direction, by midnight. The last eastbound Muni Metro train will depart daily at 11:50 p.m. and last westbound train at 12:00 a.m. Read more information in our blog: Late Night Subway Service Returns in October.

 

Effective August 14, 2021

The M Ocean View returns to rail service and resumes its full pre-pandemic route, traveling from Balboa Park to the Embarcadero Station. This line provides additional service in the Muni Metro subway and will serve all stations from Embarcadero to West Portal.  

Service hours are 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays, operating approximately every 10 minutes and 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends, operating approximately every 12 minutes.  

On weekends from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m., the M Ocean View will run from Balboa Park to West Portal only. Customers should use the K Bus or L Bus for service downtown during these weekend hours.  

 

Effective May 15, 2021

All Muni Metro subway stations open for service with the KT Ingleside-Third Metro rail service between Sunnydale and Balboa Park Station, and the N Judah Metro rail between 4th and King (Caltrain) and La Playa (Ocean Beach). New Muni Metro hours in effect to accommodate ongoing subway maintenance work.

L Taraval Bus and M Ocean View Bus service continue.

K Ingleside Bus and N Judah Bus service are suspended except from 5 a.m. to 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. weekdays, and 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. weekends – the hours between Owl service and Metro service.

S Shuttle Metro service between Embarcadero and West Portal will supplement KT Ingleside-Third service in the event of delays.

F Market & Wharves Historic Streetcar service resumes between Fisherman's Wharf and Castro.

 

Effective January 23, 2021

The T Third restarts rail service between Sunnydale and Embarcadero Station, with safety and operational improvements completed at Embarcadero Station. Trains enter Embarcadero Station, serve the station, then turn back to Sunnydale. This service provides connections from Sunnydale, 3rd Street and Mission Bay neighborhoods to downtown and Market Street.

Bus substitutions will provide Muni Metro service from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. between Metro rail and Owl service.

On weekends, buses will serve the T Third from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. between Sunnydale and Steuart Street. Embarcadero Station opens at 8:00 a.m.

K Ingleside, L Taraval and M Ocean View remain as bus routes through the spring as subway repairs continue, particularly in the Eureka Curve near Castro Station.

 

Effective December 19, 2020

The J Church returns as a temporary surface-only route between Balboa Park and Church and Market streets, with new temporary accessible transfers on Church Street at Market Street and at Duboce Street. These new temporary key stops will be important for customers with accessibility needs when subway service returns in 2021.
