Transfer or Replace a Permit

PERMIT TRANSFER

Fee: $25.00 

If you have moved and changed addresses within the same RPP area or have purchased a new vehicle you may apply for a transfer in person or by mail at the SFMTA Customer Service Center at 11 South Van Ness Avenue. Please supply a copy of the California DMV registration showing the applicant's name and address within the permit area, along with a completed application.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT FOR BUSINESS PERMIT: A request for transfer of parking permit to a new vehicle and/or to a new employee must be made in writing on official business letterhead.

Permits cannot be transferred if there are delinquent parking tickets on the plate.

Permits cannot be transferred from one area to another.  You must apply for a new permit in the area to which you are moving and pay the applicable fee.

Change of Plates on the Same Vehicle and Lost License Plates

If you have changed your plates on the same vehicle, or lost your plates you may apply for a transfer in person or by mail at the SFMTA Customer Service Center at 11 South Van Ness Avenue. Permit Lost/Stolen/Needs Replacement

All RPP permits are being enforced virtually now. More information on virtual enforcement available online at www.SFMTA.com/RPP.

If your license plate has been stolen please email the police report to vintoplate@sfmta.com. You will be issues a temporary hangtag permit until you receive your new license plate. Once you've received your new license plate, please email vintoplate@sfmta.com with the new registration tag so we can transfer your annual permit. 

 

Permit for a New Car

If you have purchased a new or used car and do not yet have your permanent license plates you can still apply for an annual permit. To apply, please submit the following documents online, by mail or in person to the SFMTA Customer Service Center at 11 South Van Ness Avenue, open Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

  1. Completed application (available at the top of this page)
  2. Proof of Vehicle Purchase – Purchase agreement or Temporary Registration
  3. Proof of Residency (please see above for requirements regarding insurance and California registration)

Your temporary permit (good for 90 days) will first be issued to the last 7 digits of your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). Once you have received your permanent plates and vehicle registration, email a copy of vehicle registration to vintoplate@sfmta.com so we can update our database with your new plate number. We will send you a confirmation email/letter that your virtual permit is now active. Failure to do so may result in being cited for Overtime Parking in an RPP zone.
