Thank you for your continued interests in the Twin Peaks Tunnel Track Replacement Project.
SFMTA awarded the construction contract to NTK Construction on April 5. When a contract is awarded, a series of notifications will be sent to stakeholders and detailed information will be made available prior to any construction starting. During the time after a contract is awarded, the contractor will begin preparing for their work such as acquiring materials and equipment and planning their construction schedule.
Construction is expected to begin later this summer and continue through fall 2017.
More information about the transit service during construction, including maps and bus substitution frequency, will be posted to the Project Website once confirmed.
The Twin Peaks Tunnel Track Replacement is a necessary maintenance of the Muni Metro system that will also improve on-time performance and safety for Muni customers and the surrounding neighborhoods. The entire track and track infrastructure between West Portal and Castro stations will be replaced, and additional repairs will be made to the tunnel walls and ceiling. Seismic upgrades will be made to the original east portal of the tunnel, Eureka Valley station.
The track replacement will lift the speed restriction currently in place for trains moving through the tunnel and cut down on unexpected service disruptions. The average lifespan of light rail tracks is approximately 50 years. The track currently in the tunnel was last replaced in 1975. In the nearly one hundred years that the Twin Peaks Tunnel has been in operation, this will have been only the third time a full track replacement has taken place.
