Muni Elevators Modernization

프로젝트 소개 (Project Introduction)

LATEST UPDATE: Castro Westbound Platform Elevator Finished Upgrading to Start Service

The SFMTA is glad to announce that the rehabilitation of the Castro westbound platform elevator that started in May has recently been completed. The elevator is now in service. This will greatly improve accessibility and convenience for all customers, especially wheelchair users, seniors, and others with disabilities who benefit from elevator access. It will also reduce maintenance related service interruptions on elevators in the future.

The planned upgrade is part of the Muni Elevator Safety Modernization Project that is upgrading 12 Metro elevators with modern, state-of-the-art technology. The elevators are being upgraded with a new, stainless-steel cab, doors, hardware, hydraulics and an operating panel that is connected to an electronic monitoring system that will track escalators and elevators 24-hours a day for operating issues.

The Castro elevator is the eighth of 12 being rehabilitated systemwide. To maintain an adequate accessible service, only one station is scheduled for rehabilitation at any one time in the Muni Metro system except for unexpected emergency repairs.

As a separate system improvement project, a new elevator will be constructed under the Castro Station Accessibility Improvement Project at Harvey Milk Plaza. That project will break ground in late 2022.

To ensure that Muni system is in a state of good repair, the SFMTA will rehabilitate and modernize 12 elevators in the entire subway system for the next four years. Once complete, the new elevators equipped with the state of art technology will greatly improve safety and reliability of Muni system, especially for seniors, people in wheelchairs and those who have special need.

Features of the new elevators:

  • New closed loop door operators will provide a new type of motorized mechanism that opens and closes the doors to make it safer and more reliable.

  • Custom door and cab sills provide metal tracks that guide the doors to open and close, with debris traps to reduce door issues caused by foreign objects.

  • Elevator/Escalator Management System will use computers to allow 24/7 monitoring and remote troubleshooting of the equipment.
