Sunset Tunnel Weekend Construction Rescheduled

Share this:

Due to wet weather conditions, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has rescheduled the Sunset Tunnel construction planned for the weekend of Jan. 9. The rainy weather will create unsafe working conditions for the workers and will adversely affect the quality of the work.

Over the weekend, the N Judah rail service will continue to operate as scheduled for subway early shutdown during the Muni subway communications system upgrades. Although the subway is closed nightly from 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., the N Judah trains will still operate outside of the subway between Church & Duboce and Ocean Beach. Customers traveling to Caltrain Depot after 9:30 p.m. will have to take an inbound K/L/M bus shuttle on Market Street to Folsom Street stop, and then transfer to the T Third rail service to continue the trip. The Embarcadero Station, which usually remains open for the T Third trains, is closed for the subway night work to help accelerate the construction schedule. As a result, the T Third trains will only operate between Folsom Street and Sunnydale Avenue from about 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.

So far we have performed 13 weekend shutdowns to complete over 70% of the Sunset Tunnel work. There will be four more weekend shutdowns scheduled for 2016. The tentative dates are Jan. 23-24, Feb. 12-14, Feb. 26-28 and Mar. 4-6. We are working diligently with the contractor to expedite the rest of the construction and will do the best we can to finish the work as quickly as possible.

Thank you for your understanding and patience while we work to improve your Muni system. By replacing the aging track and other infrastructure inside the tunnel, the Sunset Tunnel Trackway Replacement Project will help improve safety and reliability of the N Judah rail service for Muni customers.
