Average Weekday Boardings

Purpose

Ridership is a key measure to monitor the attractiveness of transit services. Increasing ridership results in congestion relief and is an important metric in measuring San Francisco's progress toward becoming a healthier, more sustainable and livable city.

Definition

Ridership is measured by automated passenger counters on buses and by traffic checkers on rail vehicles and reported system-wide monthly as average weekday boardings.

Methodology

Average weekday boardings: sum ([average weekday ridership])

Target

FY 22-23 Target: Achieve greater than 422,000 Total Average Weekday Boardings

Notes

On-board automatic passenger counters (APC) from the majority of the bus fleet, but excluding coaches 8600-8750 and 30' Orions.  Routes served by ETI trolley coaches in 2019 may also not be well represented.

April 2020 to November 2020: Due to COVID-19 changes in service, system-wide ridership was measured by Trolley and Motor Bus transportation modes exclusively.

Reported results are subject to change as data quality improves or new data becomes available.
