Taxi Industry

Dear Taxi Industry Members,

This morning Mayor Lurie announced that the city would begin allowing Waymo autonomous vehicles to drop off and pick up passengers on Market Street. Taxis and SF Paratransit vehicles will continue to be the only other authorized services on Market Street, along with our Muni service lines and emergency response vehicles.

There will be no changes to access for taxis along the corridor. Mayor Lurie’s direction to allow Waymo cars on Market Street is part of his vision to advance the city’s downtown revitalization efforts, and our transportation network is the backbone of the city’s economic vibrancy.

Taxis are a vital component of this network, and we’re proud of that.

Taxis serve a bigger purpose than a single ride – your contributions support a bigger need in our city. Taxis are core to San Francisco’s safety net of services and serve residents and visitors in every neighborhood. For older adults and people with disabilities, San Francisco’s network of taxis is not only accessible, but reliable. Taxis will continue to play an important role in human-delivered transportation and your commitment to providing outstanding customer service will continue to distinguish taxi services.

Your countless contributions are a testament to how many modes of transportation can thrive and work in complement of each other. Market Street has been evolving since it was first constructed in 1873 and will continue to evolve as the city grows and adapts to changing times.

The SFMTA remains committed to supporting the taxi industry through innovative programs and services, such as the Taxi Upfront Fare Pilot and the Essential Trip Card Program. We value your ongoing feedback and will continue to explore new opportunities to support a thriving taxi industry in San Francisco.

With sincerest gratitude,

Julie Kirschbaum, Director of Transportation
