*March 25, 2014 Project Update: All legislative items related to this Safe Routes to School project were approved at the SFMTA's March 21, 2014 engineering public hearing. The SFMTA Board will consider final approval during a regularly scheduled meeting on April 15, 2014.*
In response to community concerns, in 2013, the SFMTA installed four speed humps and three pedestrian refuge islands on Ortega St adjacent to the Sunset Reservoir (between 24th and 28th avenues). The SFMTA is proposing additional parking changes in this area to accommodate the design of the Outer Sunset Safe Routes to School project.
The proposed changes will improve sightlines at intersections to make crossing Ortega on foot an easier and safer experience as well as provide more space to drive and bike through narrow sections of Ortega. This will be accomplished through adding new red zones on Ortega; approximately 13 to 15 parking spaces will be removed near Sunset Reservoir, while four additional spaces will be removed near AP Giannini Middle and Sunset Elementary schools.
This drawing illustrates the locations of proposed parking changes.
On March 21st, 2014, the SFMTA will be holding an engineering public hearing to legislate these parking changes.
