Share this:

June 16, 2015 the SFMTA Board approved the Safer Market Street project, a package of engineering solutions designed to reduce conflicts and improve safety conditions for all users, including turn restrictions, extension of the existing transit-only lanes to 3rd Street, and new loading and painted safety zones.

Approximately a month after approval of the Safer Market Street project, paint crews have completed their work at the intersections of 8th, 5th and 3rd streets, including restriping the streets for the upcoming turn restrictions, continental crosswalks, and painted safety zones. Within the next couple weeks work at the remaining intersections will be complete. Tuesday, Aug. 11 the City will enact the turn restrictions. Visit www.sfmta.com/safermarketst for more information as Aug. 11 approaches.

The extension of the transit-only lanes on Market Street began, Friday, July 31, between 7th and 8th Streets.  Construction will continue into January, and will only be on weekends that do not coincide with a holiday or special event. Construction work hours will be from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. Friday night to Sunday morning. The extension of the transit-only lanes is scheduled to be complete by January 2016.

During constructions hours on the respective block the crew is working on:

  • No traffic will be allowed on the center track lanes
  • Local access will be permitted in the curbside lane both east and westbound
  • Muni buses will use curbside stops
  • Loading zones will not be available

The following Muni lines and routes will be affected:

  • F Market & Wharves (streetcars will use the track lane but expect delays)
