Project Update: Proposed One-Year Extension of the Park Presidio Lombard Temporary HOV Lanes Project, and Evaluation Report

Share this:

From 2021 to 2022, the SFMTA, in partnership with Caltrans, launched a high-occupancy vehicle (HOV or carpool) lanes pilot project along the Park Presidio Boulevard and Lombard Street corridors in the Richmond and Marina districts. These lanes were designed to improve conditions for transit and carpool users and make better use of limited road space to move more people.

Now, four years later, we’ve completed the Park Presidio Lombard Temporary HOV Lanes Final Evaluation Report, which details our analysis of the lanes’ performance. The report shows enhanced performance for Muni, including improved reliability and travel times and increased overall movement of people.

Based on these findings, we recommend that the HOV lanes remain in place while we are asking for a one-year extension of the pilot so we can keep working with Caltrans to finish environmental studies. From Wednesday, February 26 to Wednesday, March 12, we will share this recommendation at an online public hearing. After that, we will ask the SFMTA Board of Directors to approve the pilot extension later this spring. To keep the lanes long-term, both the SFMTA Board of Directors and Caltrans would need to approve them.

The public can provide feedback during the two week online hearing; however, feedback should focus on the proposed one-year extension, as this is not yet a request for permanent approval.
