We wanted to provide a brief update on the next steps for the Shotwell Slow Street. With the new Slow Streets roadway signs and median traffic diverters installed in early November, the post-pandemic design of the Slow Street is half-implemented. Slow Street pavement markings will be installed in the coming weeks, and cross street wayfinding signs will be installed once materials arrive.
Following the installation of median traffic diverters at three key intersections (16th Street, 20th Street, and 24th Street), we heard significant public opposition from stakeholders along 24th Street stating that the new treatments would impact parades and other cultural events. These were unforeseen impacts of the Slow Streets treatment on Shotwell Street that were not raised in previous meetings with stakeholders along 24th Street during design review and approvals processes.
To respond to this concern, the SFMTA proposes to relocate the median traffic diverter treatment from the intersection of 24th Street to the intersection with 25th Street. This relocation will allow community events to take place on 24th Street without impediment. The previously approved turn restrictions at 24th Street will remain in place under this proposal.
The proposed next steps to adjust the design of the Shotwell Slow Street include:
- December 2021: SFMTA team reviews proposed street changes with other city agencies via an internal review process.
- February 2022: Public hearing agenda item to gather feedback on the proposal to install turn restrictions and a median traffic diverter at the intersection of Shotwell Street & 25th Street. Information on this public hearing will be posted on the Slow Streets program webpage and mailed to affected stakeholders once the date is confirmed.
- February 2022: SFMTA crews remove median traffic diverter at 24th Street and install median traffic diverter and turn restrictions at 25th Street.
Thank you for your partnership on this project!
